I was brought in to look at a 40+ year old building due to concerns with the roof framing. The roof framing consists of piggyback scissor trusses that span roughly 55 feet. My brief assessment revealed failed plate connections, bowed top chord members, trusses bowed out of plane and evidence of...
I've recently been doing more and more work with flat floor trusses and minimally sloped roof trusses. I can pick the typical stuff off of a chart or table but when I have something outside of the norm, I'd like some assurance that what I'm asking for is reasonable/feasible. For example, typical...
RontheRedneck - You said way back in the conversation that you wish more people would call and get preliminary input on designs. I have had several projects recently (and one in the works) that I wanted some input on. Is there a good way to get in touch with you; or can you advise on where to...
I apologize guys. I posted this and then promptly turned around and searched and found several older posts on the exact subject. I obviously should've done it the other way around. I appreciate the replies though. I'm happy to see other's justifying higher fees on these jobs.
What is the going rate for engineering fees on a pre-engineered metal building foundation? I have a decent grasp on fees for other things but I have a hard time with these. Do you guys quote these on a percent construction cost basis or dollars per square foot?
Does anyone have any information regarding cold formed shapes from the 1960's? We're doing a hospital addition/renovation and the existing roof is framed with I-shaped, cold formed joists. I've never seen anything like them and can't find any info on them. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks!
I have an existing building (circa 1960) with, what the plans call, "4 1/2" cellular steel floor + 2 1/2" conc." I'm trying to analyze the floor deck and framing for a new piece of equipment the tenant wants to install. Does anyone have any idea what this decking might be? It appears to be...
I've noticed recently there is very little information out there that supports HSS members used as beams. My connection design software doesn't support it and there are few connection design examples out there. AISC tabulates information (total UDL) for WF beams and other shapes but not for HSS...
Ok, thanks everyone for the input, sorry for waiting so long to respond. What we have is an elevated floor over a crawl space and the architect needs to insulate the floor. He wants to put rigid insulation on metal deck and then pour a slab over the insulation.
phamENG - You are correct, this...
I have an architect that wants to use a concrete slab on metal deck but he wants to put several inches of rigid insulation between the concrete and deck. Has anyone ever seen or done this? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Sorry, I guess there are several uses for the term "bulkhead" and probably better descriptions of what I am referring to. Most of the architects in this area generally refer to a bulkhead as any type of wall that protrudes below their ceiling line. So, in a lot of cases we're just talking about...
jayrod12 - I agree, I do the same thing but I expect that most, if not all, of those things are connected to the roof framing and not the deck. I don't think it's a big deal to occasionally screw something directly to the deck but I don't want to give the contractors free rein to connect to my...
Also, does anyone have any thoughts on hanging bulkheads from the metal roof deck? Everyone in the office acts like I'm crazy when I tell them I don't want anything hung from my roof deck.
We typically delegate load bearing and exterior cold formed framing design but the interior stud work doesn't get included as it is part of a different spec section. I think going forward we might include some basic framing details and specify limits on wall height and opening sizes for which...
Ron - This is what I've done in the past (working for consulting firms) but I work for a full service AE firm now, so if I'm not going to design it we still have to figure out who is and make that clear somehow. At least that's my opinion; would you agree?
Dave - I would agree with your take on...
I have a couple projects going where we keep coming up with the same issues regarding interior stud framing. It's always been my understanding that the interior stud work was basically delegated but I'm finding that it's really just left up to the installer to put up something that "works". In...
I've always had language in my general notes that says the most stringent requirement governs in cases of a disagreement between the drawings and specs. So, for the given example, the 50 psi spec would take precedence.
