Its scale I am talking about. I have a lot of scale build up with SAE 1541 material but not 1050. For information. Whats your definition of scale and discoloration. It may be discoloration but it comes off after I wipe it with Scotch brite. And also the build up can be felt with touch.
Hello People,
I have been seeing more than usual scale build up on axle shafts after induction heat treating. I have increased the quench concentration and the flow rate. But not much difference. What could be the reason. And can it be reduced/eliminated? Thanks
FYI: the axle material is SAE...
Thanks Swall. All our shafts are over 16 inches because they are rear axle shafts. We use a scan process for induction hardening. Straightening the shaft is part of our regular process. We have ran these shafts before but we havent seen this much warpage.
The straightener rejects the shaft even...
We induction heat treat axle shafts material SAE 1050 mod. on one of the shafts we are getting too hard with less heat effect depth where as I want more heat effect depth with with lower hardnesses as we head from surface towards the core. We use scan technique. can anyone recomend a good...
Thank you all for the input.
Question for Swall. Do I still need to have the standards mentioned above handy? Because right now I am mostly doing rockwell C because thats what the prints call for. But per my manager, we need to get more into details of microstructures and microhardnesses as our...
We have a small Met lab at our shop. We machine and heat treat axle shafts. My boss wants me to develop laboratory procedures for the lab. Is there a specific ASTM or some other standard I need to use as a guideline?
I have the folllowing equipment in the lab:
Rockwell tester (B & C)...
Thanks for all the inputs.
Just FYI we furnace temper shafts at 303 F. The customer print calls for stress relieving at 280 F for 75 minutes. From my experiments with the thermocouples located at several positions on the rack we came up with 303 F for three hours.
Also I want to ask dbooker630...
Thanks for your reply. I thought so the same but was confused. By the statement thats confusing you, I mean there are a few shafts on my shop floor that are not tagged, so we dont know if they have been tempered already or not. The hardness specifiction after induction heat treat and quench is...
We induction heat treat axle shafts made of SAE 1050 (mod.) and then furnace temper it. My question is does it really affect the microstructure or the hardness of the shafts if they have been tempered longer than they are supposed to be. In other owrds, if I am not sure whether the shafts were...
