    Manway Spring Assists

I doubt that hydraulic springs would work at an 800 lb lift. This is a pressure vessel. 400 psi at 600 degrees. MJCronin published a picture. Its a manway with a hinge in lieu of a davit. The client is obstinate. I need to 1) Provide it and only it....a torsion spring with a hinge I dont have a...

    Manway Spring Assists

Hinges work well. We use them all the time. Alignment is not an issue. I don't want to absorb the cost of going to a quick acting closure like a tube turns due to cost and the spring seems impossible for this weight. The preload on the torsion spring alone strikes me as implausible.

    Manway Spring Assists

Take off your davit, replace it with a hinge, and put a torsion spring on the hinge to assist in the lift.

    Manway Spring Assists

I have a client that insists on having top head manways mounted with spring assisted covers as opposed to davit arms. Frankly, I don't know how you can safely spring assist an 800 lb 24" 300# blind flange to open vertically. What happens if the spring fails and a body part happens to be in the...

    Pipe machined from Plate

Thanks for the responses. You have all confirmed my concerns and fears. This was the case of client pushing due to time constraints. A forging had been ordered but rejected on receipt. Time became an issue and the client suggested using plate as piece was available. I didn't think this was...

    Pipe machined from Plate

I believe everything is there. There is no seam welding. If I take a piece of 7" thk plate and cut a piece that is 7" wide x 12" lg, and then I machine it round, and bore a hole in it, I now have a 7" OD seamless piece of pipe x 12" lg that has been machined from plate. Is this legal? If it is...

    Pipe machined from Plate

If one needed a pipe 7" OD x 5" ID x 12"lg, could this be machined from a 7" thick slab of plate? Are there implications with the grain direction of the plate? I just have an unusual circumstance where I have a piece of plate available and the pipe is a long lead item. Thanks in advance.

Impact Exemption Comparison - API 650 to ASME

Can anyone shed any light as to why API's impact exemption curves are so different and more restrictive as compared to ASME? 3/8" thk SA-516-70 is good to a temp of -20F in ASME, but good only to about +8F in API 650. I have an issue where a company1 detailed an API tank and used SA-516-70. The...

    Openings in blind flanges

ANSI B16.5 Table 7 provides guidance on what size opening in what size flange can be considered inherently reinforced. See the attached scan. Best Regards, Michiganderhttp://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=415fcf2f-79fc-4b23-af26-d874bcf2b060&file=SCAN0519_000.pdf

    1/4" NPT metric equivalency

    Perfect. Thanks! Michigander.

    1/4" NPT metric equivalency

I already looked at Wikopedia and a few other sources, but nothing quite cuts to the chase. I don't need the library on BPT, I need to know what is equivalent to a 1/4" NPT in British speak. Best, Michigander

    1/4" NPT metric equivalency

What is equivalent to a 1/4" npt pipe coupling for England? I spelled out a 6mm BSP (British standard pipe thread) but am now being asked if it is a 6mm-1.2 or a 6mm-2. I am merely trying to provide a gauge connection on a small vessel. Is there a pipe thread norm in here somewhere? Thanks in...

    Axial Vessel flanges

I will need bolted flat heads for the ends. Its an interesting intersection where the bolted blind joins the longitudinal flanges. I think we'll just go the FEA route. Thanks for all the help... Michigander

    Axial Vessel flanges

MJC; Its a 36" dia x 84" lg rated at 300 psi. There is a valid process reason to flange it this way. For other reasons, we are looking at building a unit length mock up so I'd like to try and get close with hand calcs. Thanks!

    Axial Vessel flanges

I have a vessel thats essentially going to be a large soup can. The vessel is going to be split longitudinally into halves, so I need flanges that run, in essence, the length of the vessel. Are there any design aids or resources out there? Thanks in advance, Michigander.

    Leg materials and MDMT temperatures

SA-36 is now becoming increasingly unavailable as the new stronger materials become popular. A-992, for example is a structural material that is recognized as a code material, but the recognition does not include Sect 2 Part D properties. Would you just always use a code recognized material for...

    MAWP Jacket

If I'm not mistaken, dimpled jacket manufacturers have done a proof test to validate their designs. I don't know that there is a way to rerate these, short of FEA. Best Regards, Michigander.

    316/316L

I don't understand your managements concern regarding a very common industrial practice. Materials are commonly dual certified. In the 70's and 80's it was common to use SA-53B grade pipe in pressure vessels that was also dual certified as API-5L pipe. Does the API cert preclude you from using...

    When to Use Appendix 2?

Keep in mind that 22" flanges are not recognized by B16.5. Use of a 22" flange requires an Appendix 2 design confirmation.
