1 1/4 radius will have a lower pressure loss than the 1/2 radius. Problem is the elbow gets larger and clumsier to handle and install. Square throat w\ vanes are labor intensive.

    Duct shape and material

Were is the duct line going, in the attic or in the basement? I try to use round duct first, then square duct(aka 8x8, 10x10, etc.), and so on with a maximum ratio of 4:1. Geosource Heating

Speaking from a SCUBA divers stand point, if I had to raise something without a mechanical hoist, I would use air bags. So if I had to lower it, I quess I would do the opposite. Start with inflated and deflat the lift bag. 40' isn't very deep, how accurate do you have to be with your location...

    Duct metal thickness

Go with 18ga. and cross-break all sides. If your only using those 2 peices(28" Long & 60" Long), go with 16ga., It's kinda over kill, but with so few peices I can't imagine there being a bit cost difference. However, like I said 18ga. cross-broken should be fine.

    Ducts in ceilings

Running in the trusses is going to be difficult for the installer. What about putting the unit in the attic and running the mains in the attic space, then they won't have any problems running the branch lines in oval down the wall cavities.
