    Cam drive noise reduction

Later model Ford 300cid (4.9l) I6's used a 'composite' timing gear, but I don't know what the exact material is. It is siginificantly quieter than the helical cut metal gears they initially used and seems to wear well. I don't know when the changeover date was (there is probably a range of...

    Bosch Automotive Handbook - Publisher?

OK, I wasn't sure because Amazon lists the Bentley Publishers ISBN is different than the SAE ISBN. 0837606144 - Bentley 0768006694 - SAE Note that your Bentley link shows a different ISBN than your SAE link. The Amazon link is to the Bentley listed ISBN, but if you scroll down to the Product...

    Bosch Automotive Handbook - Publisher?

Does anyone have any comments or can compare the two published English translations of the Bosch Automotive Handbook? I see SAE puts out one from Dec 2000 and Bentley Publishers puts out one from Jun 2000. The price difference is 20% (with SAE being more expensive) and really what i'm after is...

    Knock Sensor Output

Hrm. I dunno about that bore relationship to frequency thing. Here is a page right out of a Ford service manual: http://acc-electronics.com/cloud/images/page3_55.jpg Note that the 5.8L is a 4" bore 3.5" stroke V8 wherein the 4.9L is a 4" bore 3.98" stroke I6. Also note that...

    Synthetic Transmission and Differential Fluids

Shaun, I think you missed the point of TheBlacksmiths post. His point (as I read it) is that there must be something to it, because the manufacturer (in this case Ford) felt the need to spend the money on synthetic diff fluids over conventional. They also reccomend not replacing the fluid as...

    Engine Oil spec

Err, that link came from: http://www.rotella.com/products.php#tmultigrade and on the "Technical Specifications" link. Also, on this link: http://www.rotella.com/products/rotella_t.html it says: -quote- For gasoline engines, it exceeds API SL, SJ and SH. -endquote- -=Whittey=-

    Injection Timing

Pat: I was thinking of sequential when I wrote the initial post. As for the valve open, I was thinking that valve-open would be the best time to inject. I can't think of a reason why it would make little/no difference (as Greg pointed out). Greg: Do you have any idea why there is little/no...

    Injection Timing

A couple questions on fuel injection... 1) How long of a pulse width is 'normal' on an injector? 2) When (compared to valve timing) is optimum to start the injection? 3) When valve open time is less than pulse width, is this very bad? A quick bit of math shows that at even a modest 5,000rpm on...

    Super- and turbocharging - 'twincharging'

That sounds like a problem with all automatics. Change the automatic to a stick and the problem goes away. Change turbo to naturally aspirated and you're still going to have a problem. Perhaps a reprogram of the tranny is in order? -=Whittey=-

    Super- and turbocharging - 'twincharging'

"Therefore they are not for tight circuits, hill climbs, dirt or tarmac rallies (fast tarmac and/or expert drivers are an exception) and other dirt surface events" ^^ So what they are saying is: "In order to race, you have to know how to drive." I thought that was a given...

    Super- and turbocharging - 'twincharging'

Whipple claims 70-80% efficiency and a guy on another forum claims sprintex has a lysholm-type supercharger with up to 95% efficiency but he gets very defensive when you ask for proof. http://www.whipplesuperchargers.com/content.asp?PageID=68 -=Whittey=-

Exhaust scavenging on a turbo header

Bobtail, on that tubular header was it a tuned tubular header or do you believe the benefit was mainly from the (assumed) increased flow? -=Whittey=-

    Super- and turbocharging - 'twincharging'

Centrifugal superchargers are also generally louder than both turbo's and roots-type blowers. Also, will a centrifugal supercharger last 100k miles (160k kilometers) with little to no maintenance? I do keep trying to get my friend to make his own blower kit for his Talon.... A big 'ol chromed...

    Hood vents over hot sections

For the 4.9L inline six, Ford put in an injector fan and raised the fuel pressure to fight vaporlock. This is a non-crossflow head design so the injectors and fuel rail are ~3 inches of the exhaust manifold. They also put a heat shield up. Here are two pics of its setup...

Turbine and Compressor maps, where to find it?

The only manufacturer that seems to publish their maps is garret. The others sometimes give you a glitzy picture with no real information (a curve on a graph with no labels , but lots of pretty colors). You might have some luck emailing the manufacturers themselves, but other than that you're...

    DOH Cam Head Design

If you keep it open, especially on a one-lunger, wouldn't you run into problems with reversion back out the carb? On a multi-cylinder engine, its reasonable that another cylinder will be opening up, but not on a one-lunger. Closing the valve early seems like it would cause a little more loss in...

    LOW RPM DAMAGING?

Yah, but in this case its a 4x4 magazine. Or if you look in Truckin magazine, they rarely ever go below ~3000 rpm! 3000rpm on most truck motors isn't exactly what i'd call the low end of the spectrum, and oftentimes its only a couple hundred rpm lower than their peak torque. Hell, i've seen some...
