Setting the Zero Display to "Empty" caused the cell to display without any space between the fraction and the open parenthesis. But setting it to "Zero" produced the result I was looking for (with a space).
I ran into a very odd case where I am using a coded fraction in a tabular note followed by the decimal equivalent inside coded parentheses. So the code in my tabular cell appears like this:
<V1!4> <(>.250<)>
When I accept my spreadsheet changes, the table on my drawing adds a dash in between...
Aha! Thanks so much John. You are exactly right - the part was migrated from I-deas, and deleting it didn't help me either. I will make a go of it from scratch - at least there was nothing wrong with my Deform steps.
For what it's worth, I prefer the sketch patterning tools as well...

Kapil - against my preference as well, my company has set a best-practice standard to use Extrude instead of Normal Cutout. I forget why - we're fairly new to the NX world and I think it was a matter of preference. I thought Extude was (also) a Sheet Metal...
