    Elastomer discoloration

I've just spoken with the vendor, and they confirm a problem in manufacturing that has since been corrected. Our parts will be replaced. Thanks for the education everyone.

    Elastomer discoloration

Thanks Pat, Actually, the parts don't contact the cardboard bin. They have their own plastic containers as received from the vendor. These containers are then placed into the cardboard bins. I'm beginning to suspect a problem with the material itself. The clarity/discoloration differs with the...

    Elastomer discoloration

Sorry for the late response. My post was sent late Friday. The parts are kept indoors in our stockroom at room temperature. There are overhead fluorescent lights that are turned off at night and weekends. The parts are shaded by the metal shelves above and the cardboard bins in which they're...

    Elastomer discoloration

Hi All, We use small suction cups on the equipment we sell. The material is a clear polyurethane. The cups we pull from stock (in clear plastic containers) often have discolored to yellow/amber. Aesthetics aside, I'm concerned about a loss of flexibility. Will the durometer be affected over...

    Lazy designers/drafters

"Your not exactly attracting the top talent pool with that." I believe that money attracts everyone, not just the good workers. How simple life would be if we could measure someone's competence by their paycheck. Not all unworthy people get weeded out. Some get promoted or become leaders.

    Lazy designers/drafters

I've noticed that this thread concerning incompetence contains poor spelling and grammar. Some sentences are unintelligible. Perhaps the ease of computer communication is corrupting engineers as well as drafters.

Treatment to an existing residential door for improved noise control

Eric, Instead of buying a longer bit, you could drill through the hinge side of the door to access the middle cavity. Then plug the hole with a short length of dowel and sand flush.

Treatment to an existing residential door for improved noise control

Eric, Whichever method you use, if the door becomes significantly heavier, you should consider using longer screws through the hinges and into the framing. If you use an expanding foam, it may be prudent to clamp both faces of the door with stiff, flat boards and allow the foam to expand...

    SMD TUBES

I'm looking for a source of surface mount component tubes. Not the components themselves, just the antistatic plastic tubes that they come packaged in.

    Different cultures and their quirks/food/customs/drink

Many years ago, as a kid, I ordered fish in Germany. I was put off by the head, scales, and bones. A few years ago I made the same mistake, assuming things had changed. Too much work for so little meat. Perhaps I'm just a spoiled, lazy, filet-loving American. Is it just my imagination that...

    Definition of an Engineer

I agree that some branch of physics has to be involved. It can't just be problem solving (everyone does that). But then, are software engineers really "engineers"? My neighbor (a "people person") once said that my job is easy because I only work with inanimate objects. I didn't strangle her. :)

    Engineering mistakes

Thanks for the clarification. As an aside, one thing that grates is the smug tone of some engineering critiques. As if the critic would never have made such a foolish error! But then, the best way to avoid criticism is to do nothing.

    Engineering mistakes

Would someone explain the role of "aerodynamics" on the Skylab panels? Is space not a vacuum? Or could the author have meant "thermodynamics".

Tom, With PDM, you can also display the part description (that you added in File Properties) along with the file name.

What is the best engineering advice you ever received?

A designer's greatest asset is the lead time between design and production.

    Controlling a rodless cylinder

With air pressure off, the piston of a rodless cylinder (1/2" bore, 15" stroke) is at mid-stroke. It's controlled with a 5 port, 2 position solenoid valve and flow restrictors at each actuator port (controlling exhaust). Upon pressurization, the piston shoots to the end of stroke regardless of...
