Step loads of a human on a structure

We have a requirement to provide a 4 foot long cantilevered structure that must withstand a 250 lb person stepping on it, mid span (2 feet)to reach into the machine. If not for this requirement the beam would only support its own weight which would be about 50 lb. We will need to make it much...

    Prying loads on bolts.

My question above relates to 1) the practice of using bolts in a configuration where a prying load is the main load being resisted. 2) If this practice is ok is our assumption about using a pre-stress value on the bolt that keeps the joint closed is a good guide for designing such a joint?

    Design by rule of thumb

A rule of thumb given to me for evaluating another person's estimate was as follows. Divide 50 by the person's age. Multiple the results by the estimate. Example. estimate 5 weeks, age 35, 50/35 = 1.43. Plan for an effort of 5 x 1.43 = 7.1 weeks. You learn over time that stuff happens. Sick...

    Prying loads on bolts.

We have a piece of equipment with steel side frames of a given distance from each other; 1.25 thk plates parallel to each other with cross bars. We need to mount this on top of a similar piece of equipment with a side frame to side frame distance a few inches wider or narrower than ours. A...
