Thanks again for all the responses.
Not to belabor the point, but the "components" to which I referred earlier are precast concrete manholes and the "adjacent components" are concrete sewer mains.
I wanted to present the issue as objectively as possible, so as to garner objective feedback from...
Ron, no offense taken!
To your second statement - I agree. I did "jump the gun" a bit instead of slowing down and thinking through the reasons behind the suggestions.
And the decision to remove my name from the report was rash and insulting to my boss - I see that now.
Again, thanks to...
If his judgment is indicated by his actions, then his boss was correct in doing what he did.
Ron....Ouch. I would like to think this was an example of poor communication on my part, rather than a direct reflection of my judgement. Again, my motivation was to have the recommendations supported...
Thanks again to everyone's insight. I have decided to wait and see. I learned that my boss is dealing with some personal issues, which may have explained his unhappy demeanor yesterday. It could have been coincidence - he learned of this personal issue shortly before receiving my report.
So...
Thanks for all the responses.
Ron, your post hit it on the head, I think. You make some great points and, upon reflection, I agree with what you've stated. I think I may see what the intent was but, perhaps at the time, the communication wasn't as clear as it should have been.
I see now how...
Oh, and the only reason we were replacing adjacent components is because they no longer met the "latest" standards. They were in fine condition as well but were slightly undersized - again, per the client's most recent design standards.
From a technical standpoint, the system was/is working...
My biggest concern was the reasoning for why the changes to my report were being made.
It was soley because my boss felt the client would not look favorably on my recommendations. No other reasons were given.
So, I was then in the position where I had to write a report that gave data which...
Ok, so I wrote a report on a system, providing a summary of the data from our inspections and then recommendations for repair or replacement.
My boss reviewed the report and told me to change a number of my recommendations. His reasoning was, "The client won't like what you've proposed. They...
jdslon,
I did pretty much what you're contemplating; I am a ME by education and was working for an aboveground storage tank inspection company while working towards my P.E.
I earned my P.E. in 2006 then was disappointed to learn that my current employer wouldn't acknowledge that milestone at...
bimr - LoL, I wish I could! I have boring analysis from our geotechnical engineer and the blowcounts are consistently low along the pipeline corridor. One possible theory is that the majority of the soils out there are some type of riverbed silt or sand (since the entire railyard sits on a...
coloeng - the line to be abandoned runs under a railyard. The owner of the railyard is asking the question.
cvg - my thoughts exactly. But before I analyze the use of a cellular grout (or other lightweight fill), I wanted to know if the PMs concern was even a valid one.
Hey all,
For larger diameter buried waterlines that we need to remove from service (16" diameter and larger), we specify that a flowable fill should be used to fill the pipe.
For this particular application, the soil bearing capacity is very low (N60 blowcounts of less than 8). The project...
Is this a private water utility, doing work in a local community?
If so, it sounds like they may already have to abide by at least some of the design standards of the local municipality.
In my area, we have one private water utility that owns/operates a number of wells, pump stations, and...
You may be able to befriend one of the plant managers at a local municipal treatment facility already using these filters.
I thought Infilco Degremenont purchased the company that made the ZeeWeed filters....guess not.
Anyways, talking to a local sales rep can also help. If you can trade...
Anyone know of a good resource for designing thrust restraint collars?
The application is a 16-inch diameter ducitle iron watermain along a busy roadway in Virginia.
I'm looking at options for thrust restraint (thrust collars, thrust blocks, restrained joints, combinations of these) and was...
You should ask the contractor why he's questioning the design and what background support he's using to propose his alternate design. I would venture to guess he's trying to save a buck and hoping you'll agree.
I also design waterline thrust restraint "overly conservative" because it's my PE...
Great, thanks to all for the replies.
Stevewag, I have as-builts to go by, which may or may not be accurate. An alternative would be test holes - but the client doesn't always want to pay for them. They keep telling me they have As-Builts, so why the need for test holes? ha!
Maury, good...
All,
How do ya'll show connects to existing ductile iron (say, class 350, push-on joints) with new ductile iron (class 350, push-on joints)?
In other words, do you show a sleeved coupling (http://www.ejprescott.com/products/Clamps/DuctileIronPipeCouplings.pdf) from the plain end of the...
Tenpenny,
Entirely possible. But, if that is the case, then why not involve the Lead Engineer (me)?
If the issue is purely technical, then the Lead Engineer on the project should be involved.
If the Lead Engineer is/was not involved, then I can only assume the issue was anything but purely...
LOL - I don't think so! I've spoken with her about this site and she doesn't *appear* to know of it at all.
Regardless, I do believe her to be a very competent engineer but not a good manager. Unfortunately, I've worked with (or for) very few good managers with engineering backgrounds. For...
