    young's modulus of soft clays

Can anyone give me a typical value of the undrained young's modulus (Eu) for very soft alluvial clays with an undrained shear strength of about 10kPa? I'm trying to calculate the immediate settlement of a rock embankment on such a material. Thanks!

undrained young's modulus of soft clays

Can anyone give me a typical value of the undrained young's modulus (Eu) for very soft alluvial clays with an undrained shear strength of about 10kPa? Or is there a way I can estimate it from the results of an undrained triaxial compression test results? I'm trying to calculate the immediate...

    undrained youngs modulus of clay

Can anyone give me a typical value of the undrained young's modulus (Eu) for very soft alluvial clays with an undrained shear strength of about 5kPa? I'm trying to calculate the immediate settlement of a rock embankment on such a material. Thanks!

how can I relate SPT - N values to Youngs Modulus in sands

Thanks - do you have a reference for this at all?

how can I relate SPT - N values to Youngs Modulus in sands

Is there an empirical equation relating SPT-N values to Youngs Modulus E in sands? (preferably one that gives me E in kN/m2) I am doing a pile foundation design where knowing E would be useful. Thanks

mooring analysis using British Standard 6349

I am trying to evaluate mooring forces on a 10 000DWT minibulk vessel using BS6349: part 1. The vessel is in shallow water (depth/draught at low water is 1.2), so I need to apply a depth correction factor to the current force. However the figure in the standard (fig 30) only gives me correction...

    orthotropic material definition (in ROBOT)

I am trying to model a deck made of longitudanal precast planks that are grouted together. In the transverse direction I want to be able to transmit shear but not flexure through the grout - is there any way I can define a material that does this? The program I am using (ROBOT) allows me to...

fatigue analysis for longitudanal welded attachments

I have a large stressed monopile (3.5m in diameter) to which is welded a 200x200mm channel to house cabling. In doing fatigue analysis to the DNV codes I am using a S-N curve classification of F3. Do I also need to included a Stress Concentration factor in my fatigue calc?

    pinned releases in LUSAS

I am trying to model a pinned release between two thick in LUSAS that is free to rotate in all 3 dimensions. LUSAS only allows releases of beam elements in the y and z directions so I am trying to connect my members by using a joint, but am confused about what translational stiffness to put in...

    pinned connections in trusses

Its been a while since I've had to do structural detailing and from my dim memory of truss design in college I seem to remember that if the centrelines of all the members at a joint intersect then the joint has no moment capacity - i.e is a pinned joint. Is this right?

determination of length of steel piles

I am doing an assessment on a jetty and part of this is to determine the bearing capacity of the steel jetty piles. In order to do this I need to know the length of embeddment of the piles. Does anyone know of any testing techniques that are available to determine this? Apparantely sonic...

paramters for time history analysis in ROBOT

I am trying to do a linear time history analysis in ROBOT and I am confused about the damping parameters I have to put in. For the modal decomposition method is the damping parameter that has to be input the logarithmic decrement (delta) or xi (where delta = 2*pi*xi)? Thanks

change of air pressure with temperature

I am designing a sealed box girder that is to be submerged under the sea once the box has been sealed. When the box has been submerged the trapped air reduces in temperature by about 10-15 degrees. How will this affect the air pressure within the box? Thanks

natural frequency of a pinned beam

Thanks for the help - unfortunatley we don't have a copy of Blevins in the office and we don't have a FE program with the option to take into account pre stressed effects. Any advice on how to make assumptions of the increased stiffness due to tension loads? (structural dynamics are not my forte...

    importing external data into LUSAS

I am modelling a pile as a 3D thick beam in LUSAS and want to impose a distributed load onto the pile that varies with height. I have the information of the loading against height in spreadsheet form - is there any way of getting LUSAS to read the data from this spreadsheet (or other external...

    drag coefficients for ellipse

Greg I think I mean a strut - its a cross beam of an offshore structure designed to support marine current turbines, and has a major axis dimension of 5m and a minor axis of 1m, and a total length of 30m.
