Well thats kinda what I am thinking that its used for is some sort of crimping or swaging. The instrument is made out of steel so it is somewhat strong even though the material thickness is only .065".

I agree with Duwe6 i dont think that the FAI on the assembly would be representative of the components within that assembly unless they to were FAI components.
I found a useful link on proper gaging using pins. They also discuss using ring gages if you are interested in including that in your SOP.
