We calculated downdrag for abutment drilled shafts based on contribution of the reinforced strap zone of MSE wall and the underneath compressible soils. But the structure engineer said they typically do not consider downdrag in these locations. Is it reasonable? Thanks a lot.

Actually the problem is not the denominator being zero, but the term sin(phi-beta-theta) becomes negative when phi<beta+theta which leads to a negative value inside the square root. I have a case with friction angle of phi=35,a backfill slope of 2/1(H/V), then kh cannot be larger than 0.1g...

Earth pressure coefficient of unyielding wall with flat backfill is simply assumed as 1-sin(fi), but I don't know what I should use if the backfill is slope?
