Thanks for the advise Frederick
I will do the first three suggestions next time we have this issue, last batch we did seemed o.k ( client change heat treater )
4:I did do a hardness test before and after which yeilded little change as expected.
5. No, there was not size change in the part...
I was wondering what experiences other cryogenicist might have had when processing M2 tooling. I recently treated some tooling from the same batch that has had some inconsistent results and thought the base heat treatment may have been at fault, as the cryogenic process and post temper cycle I...
NickE,
The reason their isn't any hard data with relation to stress relieving of aluminium and aluminium alloys on my site is that there hasn't been any conclusive studies to definitively explain the results of the process with this type of material. We have relied on our field testing do...
From my experience 6160 can be tempered at 350 F for 8 hours then air cooled to give a good final stress relieve. You can also cryogenically treat it then stress relieve if you wanted to take an extra step that might help reduce fracturing

Can i suggest, to be more confident in the finished pin / plate assembly have it cryogenically treated (after the final welding and heat treatment). This should reduce the stress induced during the welding process and increase the wear resistance.
Something else to keep in mind is that 4340 not...
