    Please quantify added strength

Thanks guys! I appreciate your comments and answers. I know that the joint is a little unorthadox but I have a situation where I'm told :"it's always been welded that way" and I'm asked to justify it to the customer. Your responses will at least allow me to offer some credible argument. Thanks...

    Please quantify added strength

Thank you for the response. I'm not sure I understand your comment about the fillet not adding to the PJP profile. It is situated directly over the PJP groove. Would that not effectivly increase the PJP groove weld throat? If not, could you explain why? Thanks again.

    Please quantify added strength

Hi all, I have a standard PJP groove weld joint configuration where 2 members are to be joined (members B and C) ; but then a somewhat non standard reinforcing fillet weld over it that joins members A, B, and C togather. I am looking for assistance as to how to present quantifiable evidence as...

AWS D1.1, Guided bend tests for PROCEDURE qualification

gtaw, Good point! Actually I am using steel certified to an ASTM spec. Not sure why I listed AISI in my post. Thanks anyway. Very good observation. Thanks, M249Gunner

Combat Ground Vehicle Welding Code-Steel question

That makes sense. I never really looked at it from that perspective. I may end up approaching it that way. I did start a new thread stating basically the same question as I did here. I've put so much time in digging through 3 Codes, now it's become a challenge! I do like your suggestion and may...

AWS D1.1, Guided bend tests for PROCEDURE qualification

Can anyone tell me where in AWS D1.1 it clarifies whether I should be bending to test "Longitudinal" face and root bends or "Transverse" (See Fig. 4.11) face and root bends for weld procedure qualification? The way it is written, it appears that I need to do both. However, any testing documents...

Combat Ground Vehicle Welding Code-Steel question

Thanks Duwe6, We do have DCMA oversight here. I'm thinking I should go ahead and qualify to a thicker material. I do have another perplexing question pertaining to this Code (but also to AWS B2.1 "Specification for Welding Procedure and Performance Qualification". It is obvious that the TACOM...

    AWS D1.1Ed-2008-4.1.3.2-Tack Welder Qualification

Do you mind if I ask a question related to tack welding qualification? What exactly is the test required for tack welders for AWS D1.1? Also, what are the tests required to evaluate the test plates? I remember looking through the AWS D1.1 and it didn't seem to be very clear. Could someone lead...

Combat Ground Vehicle Welding Code-Steel question

The code states in the footnotes that a groove weld will qualify for Plug welds. One plug weld is a .060" sheet metal piece welded to another component that is appx .250" thick. The GROOVE weld procedure that I have qualified is .187". This means that my thickness range is half (.093") up to...
