Architect wants to build a 60 ft. long by 20 ft. wide open plan (no interior walls)structure. The short direction roof will be broken up mid span with clerestory windows. It will be framed with custom timber scissor trusses. What's the best way to handle scissor truss thrusts and take the wind...
Architect wants to have 70ft. atrium columns using HSS sections forming a 4-sided ladder. I can figure the "r" of 4 HSS sections spread apart from each other. The question is, how to figure the spacing of the horizontal ladder pieces to make sure the overall column is not too slender. Ideas?
All,
I'm looking to get a better understanding of using CLT deck with gyp concrete topping, supported by steel beams and columns for a five story institutional building. Specifically, what to pay attention to when using the CLT as a floor diaphragm sending lateral forces to concrete shear...

3) always put together a detailed...
I have found laser scanning to be very helpful, and can provide out of plumb data, which can tell the story about bulging and rust jacking. I've had the laser scan guy also overlay visual photography on the same scan location for reference.
After doing some research, I wanted to share an excellent guide to reinforcing metal building frames and purlins: https://www.aisc.org/globalassets/modern-steel/archives/1998/03/1998v03_reinforcement_design.pdf
bones206. I was coming to the same idea last night...new central dunnage on new braced columns bypassing the existing frame, and structurally independent of the lateral PEMB frame. Might get the slab to work in lieu of new footings with relatively light RTUs. Sort of a mezzanine, but above...
Does anyone have any insight on proper methods to analyze and code check a 1970's era pre-engineered metal building (tapered columns, moment haunch, tapered beams, etc.)? The client wants to add 4 -6 new rooftop RTUs. Will likely need to load the PEMB purlins too. I'v attached a typical...

As a freshman in 1977, I bought an HP-25C. It was a great design, and it got me through engineering school. Since then, I've owned the 15C and the 41C and currently have a 32S II on my desk. HP...
