    Battered piles

thread507-491565 Hi all, I am trying to do some research on battered piles. Based on the traditional static method from the thread quoted above - if there is no bending moment acting on the battered piles, all vertical pile loads would be equal. Therefore, is it safe to say if the 2 outer...

Lateral design for residential decks in Canada

Hi everyone, I have noticed the IRC has requirements for a deck lateral load connection, which seem to be typically done by installing multiple deck tension ties attached to the deck joists and interior main floor joists. Is this lateral connection required for decks in Canada? I cannot find...

Torsion Formula - Yield strength limit states design

I can’t avoid it unfortunately. It seems odd how it is not covered in depth in the Canadian steel code. Is the maximum yield strength simply just the yield strength when dealing with torsion?

Torsion Formula - Yield strength limit states design

I’ve noticed S16 does not have any torsion formulas to follow.

Torsion Formula - Yield strength limit states design

Hi everyone, For the typical torsion formula T = J*max shear stress/r, what is the maximum shear stress for a steel circular shaft? Is it just the yield strength? For limit states design here in Canada, is there a specific resistance factor that needs to be used beside the typical 0.9? Thanks!

    Pressure Treated Lumber

Thanks for the fast response! Is there the same grading stamp on the teated lumber as a non-treated joist? And calling out a “PT SPF No. 2 Grade or better joist” is the correct way of doing it?

    Pressure Treated Lumber

Hi everyone, I have a few general question regarding pressure treated lumber, specifically pressure treated deck joists. Before the joists are treated, are they graded in the same way a non-pressure treated joist would be? For example, in Canada most lumber joists would be SPF No. 2 Grade or...

Factored vs Unfactored Pile load and Capacities

This thread (thread507-470255) is asking similar questions. One response from skeletron said that for the piles, you take the factored column load against the factored bearing resistance to design the pile diameter. But for the strip footing, they said to use the total load against the SLS...

Factored vs Unfactored Pile load and Capacities

Thanks for the response! I guess I am having troubles with determining if loading the soil over its bearing capacity is an Ultimate Limit State or a Serviceability Limit State? I know some engineers use SLS loads to check the bearing capacity of a strip footing using the ULS bearing capacity.

Factored vs Unfactored Pile load and Capacities

thread256-461138 Hi everyone, I have asked a similar question in the past but I’m not happy with how I worded it. I will try again here... When designing a helical pile with a geotechnical report, the geotechnical report gives ultimate bearing capacities to design the helical pile helices...

    Wall strapping instead of sheathing

Thanks for the input everyone. I’m still have troubles getting over how the sheathing resists the in plane bending while the strapping cannot. The sheathing is only attached to the studs, similar to how the strapping would be? Is there another way of thinking of this? I must be missing...

    Wall strapping instead of sheathing

Would it be any different if the 2X4 strapping was placed so that there was no spacing? Obviously that isn’t practical, but I’m not sure if that would mimic the sheathing.

    Wall strapping instead of sheathing

Thanks gte447f. That is what I was thinking, the studs could theoretically buckle at the same time in the same direction. The same way people say adding additional blocking between studs in a tall wall helps, when it really would not. With that being said, how is attaching the studs to normal...

    Wall strapping instead of sheathing

Thanks Canuck65. Would you say the exterior strapping is adequate for prevent stud buckling about the weak axis?

    Wall strapping instead of sheathing

Hello again everyone, I have a contractor who is building a large shed, using typical frost walls for the foundation, slab on grade for the floor and wood studded walls (14’ tall) and trusses. They are trying to build this thing as cheap as possible... For the walls, they are pushing for not...

    Joist Loaded on “Wide” Face

Thanks everyone. I went ahead and designed a lintel instead, I’m not sure how I missed the joist and plank values.

    Joist Loaded on “Wide” Face

Hi everyone, I have a situation where a contractor wants to use a 2X8 on the flat for a header over a new opening in an existing concrete wall. I am calculating the moment resistance of this 2X8 on the flat, and I am not sure what specified strength to use (in Canada, so using CSA 086). Table...

    Wood Interaction Equations

Hello, I am looking for some information on how the interaction equations for tension/compression and bending forces (combined loading) are derived. I know how to use the equations, I am just looking to learn where they come from. Thanks!

Combined Axial and Bending in Concrete

Thanks BridgeSmith. After a bit more thinking, I do understand how to account for both axial and bending stresses in concrete. But I’m still struggling with how to derive the interaction equations for wood design. Does anyone have any info on this? I get how to use the equation, I would just...

Combined Axial and Bending in Concrete

Hello, CSA O86 (wood code) provides interaction formulas for members that are subjected to combined axial and bending loads. However, I do not see any similar equation in the concrete code (CSA A23). Why is this the case? For example, I quite often see the axial force acting on a reinforced...
