Soffit Wind Loads (C&C) on an Open Structure

I am looking at a large open structure, trying to determine C&C wind loads on the soffit. Roughly 100'x164' with a low side eave height of 35.5' and a roof slope of 1/4":12". It is a PEMB structure with a lower soffit approximately 5' below the upper roof surface. There are separate purlin...

Nailable Concrete Roof Channels - circa mid 1950's

Thanks for the input. From the bottom sides these particular panels look to be in excellent condition, but no idea how the top sides look as far as moisture damage, or possible damage from someone possibly using the wrong nails. I'll be sure to include plenty of cautions to the roofer and some...

Nailable Concrete Roof Channels - circa mid 1950's

Looking at a roof deck on a mid 1950's era building. The owner has limited structural plans. The roof is fairly steep pitched and is called out on the plans as asphalt shingles over roofing felt on 2 1/2" nailable concrete roof channels. The panels have the legs turned down and notched over...

    Historic Courthouse Steel Brick Lintel

Just as follow up, found a picture that indicates this has been an issue, or not, for quite some time. Also, another photo of a very similar courthouse of a couple years later construction, although from a different architect, that seems to have a similar although not quite as pronounced...

    Historic Courthouse Steel Brick Lintel

Okay. Yes, I agree. Our only task at this point is to provide a visual observation and point out areas that may be of concern structurally. If we can't determine a cause with the information available, we'll definitely recommend additional testing of whatever nature is required to pinpoint the...

    Historic Courthouse Steel Brick Lintel

Well M-geek I'm definitely not hoping to meet up with the original mason anytime soon. :-) Rust-jacking the lintel downward is definitely a possibility, I just can't quite rationalize the exact same deflections and conditions at two locations by happenstance.

    Historic Courthouse Steel Brick Lintel

Sorry, maybe not clear enough, but it is obvious that the entire building has been repointed, my point was that it does not look like the brick has ever been completely removed and replaced. If the lintel failed and deflected after installation, then the brick would appear to have had to...

    Historic Courthouse Steel Brick Lintel

Recently did a visual on a 1919 era courthouse. East and West ends are mirrored sunken entrances, with a steel lintel above carrying brick and spanning 20' or so. The lintel itself is obviously deflected approximately 2", however the supported brick above is perfectly level. The bottom mortar...

    Structural Steel Shapes from Mexico?

We have recently had several contractors inquire about using steel fabricated in Mexico. It has been a while since this last came up, and I am not up to date on the general quality of the materials and any legal requirements for using "domestic only" steel. Anyone up to speed on the issue that...

    RISA 3d v 18 - New format

Josh - Have not reported yet. Waiting a bit to see if it runs the solution okay and to try it out on another machine, but it definitely sped up the input delays on at least one of ours.

    RISA 3d v 18 - New format

Just FYI as far as speed - one of the guys in our office happened to change the settings from multicore to single core processing. I don't know if it's machine specific or not, but it virtually eliminated all the lag he had been experiencing during input. Not sure how it will affect actual...

    RISA 3d v 18 - New format

Started first project in 18 a few days ago. So far not a good experience at all. Very slow and clunky. Always waiting any time I push a button. Many quirks in the display and just use overall. Doesn't interface with the other programs in the RISA family. This version does not appear to be...
