Blocking to counteract moment of beam.

I would recommend following Josh's approach. If an alternative material to LVL is selected, ensure the beam is analyzed as a composite section.

Structural 3d Modeling- Theory help needed (AWC/ NDS- Deck)

Don't want to beat the dead horse, but that project does not need 3D modeling.

Career Advice – Design Experience Getting Offshored

My company occasionally outsources smaller projects overseas. In some cases, this has led to individuals being promoted into upper management roles before they’re fully prepared, likely due to shifting internal responsibilities. Fortunately, I’m based in a well-managed and competent office. That...

Roof live load wood duration factor

What exactly is this roof beam supporting? It sounds like it is running the same direction as the rafter? Or is it a ceiling beam. In that case I understand the slope cutting the end of the beam. You might want to entertain a wider LVL or bump to PSL. Hopefully that helps your shear issue due to...

The beam is too deep Mr. Engineer

Not sure what your loads are. 7x wide might be the best option to avoid any steel. Anyway a PSL can work here? Also you stated "contractor wants".... What are his reasons? Is the Architect fine with using 14" leading to step in ceiling or it protruding down?

Exterior stone veneer & Rigid insulation

I'm uncertain about the dry stack approach in this context. In similar situations, I’ve seen the use of dowels installed directly into the footing, and in some cases, the method of support is left to the contractor's means and methods. Another viable option is to pour a narrower footing...

Exterior stone veneer & Rigid insulation

I have typically seen builder block—essentially a type of CMU—used from the footing up to the point where the stone veneer is supported. In most cases, I recommend one of two options: either blocks or a steel angle. However, given the distance of the stone veneer from the structural elements, as...

Using R6 Zip System Sheathing in Lieu of 1/2" plywood roof diaphragm

Thank you for the replies. I ended up suggesting installing rigid insulation or the zip system on top of the plywood sheathing.

    Lateral Design for Open Porches

I would do wood posts with knife plates. Analyze it as a cantilevered column.

Using R6 Zip System Sheathing in Lieu of 1/2" plywood roof diaphragm

Has anyone substituted a roof diaphragm design with zip system (insulation side down)? I am being asked to see if R6 zip will work. Doing some research I only found that there are shear capacities for a shearwall application. Would this work in a seismic design category D? Looking for references...

Vehicle Impact Load on Deck Posts

Does anyone know if you need to apply a vehicle impact load to a deck post? I ask this question because I have a home with a garage on the ground level and there is a deck surrounding the perimeter of the structure. I have been trying to find an exemption to this in code, or if it is even necessary.

Calculating Strength of Circular Weld at the Base of a STD. Pipe

Hello, I was wondering if anybody knows how to calculate the design strength of a circular weld? I have a way of doing it quick and dirty, however, I would like to know how to do it.

Allowable Deflection of a Timber Post

Not sure what the allowable deflection is? I know of the CBC allowable deflections but not sure if it applies to posts.

Top Mounting Guardrail on to (E) Concrete Wall

Does anybody have any good solutions for top mounting a 4x4 wood post guardrail to n existing 8" concrete wall? I have been dancing around different hardware but nothing works for a 200lb point load at the top. I am free to shift the post anywhere on the width of the wall.

    Are Concrete Moment Frames Reusable/Re-Occupiable?

@WARose Yes, a MF after a big seismic event. Essentially, there are going to be yielded rebar. Can they be replaced? How do you determine if they are in good shape? I know of assessments found in P58 and ASCE 41. I also know of taking core samples too.

Aggregate Size for Slab, Beams, Columns, etc. Question

I was looking over some plans for learning purposes and I saw a RFI that said "3/4" aggregate size is acceptable for beams, columns, slab except for use in high rebar and post-tension congested areas like column to post-tensioned beam connection". It then pointed to use 3/8". Why would a 3/8"...

    Are Concrete Moment Frames Reusable/Re-Occupiable?

@WARose Do you mean it undergo more cycles or it is repairable?
