    Capping beam support on piles

Also worth a note. The 33kN/m load shown in the OP is the "prop load" output from the WALLAP analysis if the piles were to be propped rather than cantilever.

    Capping beam support on piles

I am leaning towards whether a sensible approach to model this would be to also apply springs to the cantilevering side. The pile analysis (done in WALLAP) shows a deflection of 30mm in the cantilevering piles. To work out the spring constant for the cantilever piles, I'm thinking of applying...

    Capping beam support on piles

@PEinc Indeed I don't think taking the unexcavated piles as a fully fixed support to a cantilevering beam is the approach I want to explore here (not wrong but overly conservative leading to more than necessary reinforcement). As per my sketch (where I've incorrectly shown spring constant as...

    Capping beam support on piles

Taking the assumption that the restrained side of the capping beam is fully fixed is what I want to try to avoid.

    Capping beam support on piles

Hi all, First and foremost apologies for the length of this post. Please see the attached mark-ups to clarify what I'm going to try to explain. Not a geotech engineer so rusty in this department. Clients contractor wants me to explore a way in which he can excavate (passive side) along 6...

    Recommended books for FEA theory

Thanks for all your replies. This should be enough material to get me going :) @XR250 I'm a temporary works design engineer. I learned the theory behind FE during my time as a student but that was a long time ago and I've come to find that my note taking skills back then were, lets say...

    Recommended books for FEA theory

Can somebody recommend a good book that explains the full theory behind FEA and goes into detail about shape functions etc (including Gaus points and Jacobian matrixes..)? Ideally want something that's simply explained with examples but doesn't not compromise on detail. Thanks

    Critique my design

Hi Eng16080 The idea is to have a floating corner similar to the below:

    Critique my design

That's an elegant solution that will require thickening of the internal wall (although, not a problem) and propping of the existing wall to the south which goes up a level (problem, as cracks will ruin the remodelled bathroom upstairs). Not sure what you would do at the canopy eaves based on...

    Critique my design

Thanks for your input George. To eliminate the diagonals I would need to continue the joists from the flitch beams over the steels in both directions. Trouble then becomes figruing out a suitable way to support these overhangs at the corners. Tricky. Unfortunately my friend has seen the below...

    Critique my design

Not a permanent works engineer and do not specialise in home builds (I do temporary works for medium/large commercial/resi structures, mainly in RC). This is a single storey house extension in the UK that I'm doing a rough conceptual design for, for a friend. Mainly to assess feasibility and...
