    Device Protection

I'm working on a battery charger module. It will include within it, qty 2 of MeanWell DBU-3200, connected in parallel at the AC input and DC output, powered by 220VAC. https://www.meanwell.com/Upload/PDF/DBU-3200/DBU-3200-SPEC.PDF The spec sheet says AC current typical 17A, inrush current...

How Can You Generate This Waveform?

I'm looking to make a circuit that takes a 20-30VDC input and, when that goes high, generates a signal that also goes high, but to a different voltage (2-10VDC). Then after some time of being high, I want it to transition to a 600Hz, 50% duty cycle PWM. I'm thinking of a monostable 555 and an...

    Time Delay Relay Circuit

We have a circuit where a 5V control signal is used to turn on a MOSFET. I'd like to add a circuit in between here that, when the control goes high, the output signal that our MOSFET controls goes high for a prescribed amount of time (~5s) then goes back low. I have a circuit drawn that I think...

PCB Design Software for A Beginner

I've used Eagle once, some 10 years ago. That is the extent of my PCB design experience. I'm looking to do a simple board now (maybe a dozen components or so, 3"x4", hopefully 2 layer) and I wanted to see if anyone had suggestions on what software I could use. The EE that has since left here...

    Noisy Neopixels

So, I'm an ME in a role that forces me to act as an EE sometimes. This is one of those times, and I'm lost on this one. We have a PCB that drives a Neopixel LED string. We have a string of 6 LEDs on a cable that is only a few inches long. All is well with that setup. They want another LED...

    24VDC or 48VDC

I'm an ME here looking for some input from EE types. We have a system (mobile robotics application intended to be used in an industrial environment) that was designed around a 24VDC/160Ah battery system. For several reasons, it would be possibly beneficial to reconfigure our battery system to a...

Anodize Over Chromate? Chromate over Anodize?

We have an aluminum part that we want to be protected against corrosion. We also want the durability of an anodized finish. However, some faces of this part need to be conductive, which an anodized finish is not. Would we be able to use a conductive chromate finish over the whole part, then...

    Shoulder bolt in bending?

I've got a scenario where I would like to use a shoulder bolt (M8 threads, 10m diam 60mm long shoulder) threaded into a block (material to be chosen) as a small wheel axle. Because a wheel will be mounted on this bolt/axle, there will be a load perpendicular to the axis of the bolt. Worst case...

How to chamfer 2' diameter plate

We have a 2 foot diameter aluminum 6061-T6 plate, 1/2" thick. The two edges around the circumference are desired to be chamfered by ~1/16", 45 degrees. How does one make that chamfer?! I can't see how a mill could do it, and it wouldnt fit in any lathe I've ever seen. Any thoughts? Thanks!

    Machined Groove In Sheet Metal

Hello All, I came up with a design, but I'm not sure if this particular machining operation will cause issues. We have a 1/8" (3.175mm) thick sheet of aluminum 5052, and we need to machine an o-ring groove 1.96mm deep. Would this be a costly and difficult procedure? Thanks!

    Mecanum Wheels

Anyone have some tips or any information (not from Wikipedia...) regarding design of mecanum wheels? Thanks

Analysis for Impact vs Constant Force?

I know how to analyze a structural system for a constant applied force, but what about impact forces? Are there some general tips or rules for what a structure might be able to handle in impact when it has been rated for a constant load? i.e. If a structure is rated to withstand a constant 5kN...

    Which Sheet Steel?

I'm looking to make a type of L-bracket with a formed gusset out of sheet steel. Aluminum looks like it won't cut it for strength. Any recommendations for which type of sheet steel (~1/8" thick) would provide greatest strength and formability? Thanks

    O ring retention in groove

We want to use some small o-rings, probably -011 (OD .441", .070" thickness), durometer A70. There will be a c'bore in a plate in which the o-ring will be placed. We want the OD of the c'bore to be slightly undersized such that when the o-ring is placed in the c'bore, it will stay in place when...

    Bolted Cantilever Beam Load

I want to have what is essentially a cantilever beam bolted to a plate with a single bolt passing through the plate and into a tapped hole in the beam, as crudely depicted in the image. There is to be a downward load at the end of the beam. I am really unsure of how to analyze this as to what...

    Heat Sink Material

We are placing three electrical components in close proximity to one another and it has been determined that there must be a heat sink/heat spreader plate to keep the temperature within operating range. What would you suggest as a material to use for this heat spreader plate. I've heard aluminum...
