What does the centerline mean when used to show a pattern of features?
Does it mean only to indicate all the features individually within the pattern or does/can it mean an average location of the features in aggregate?
Attached is a drawing example for this question... to me, both examples...
If the MODs want to close or delete this thread I understand since its not a direct discussion of GD&T etc.
What I’m posting this for is to ask the community to consider sending tec-ease.com a polite email asking them to reverse their new policy requiring premium membership. Personally, I have...
Lets say we have a simple part that is a thin round disk with one or more hole patterns. Lets call the bottom surface Datum A and the major O.D. Datum B.
Using position to locate the holes, is it necessary to use Datum A in the FCF?
lightweight, cheap, strong... pick 2
I have a flat part with 3 raised surfaces on one side that are shown coplanar. The customer wants those three surfaces to be parallel to datum A, an opposite surface, within 0.3mm. While waiting for an answer, everything about the design looks like something sits on the 3 pads....
What I want...
I have a disk with some posts patterned circularly about center like a bolt circle. Although the pattern spacing (angle) is even not all the posts are there for clearance issues. Each post has a unique feature, a radius cut in the post at an angle forming a small surface feature in itself. Each...
I have a tube assembly, a long tube with two smaller tubes welded on near one end perpendicular to the long tube. The long tube already is datum A due to some other features… The two tubes are spaced apart from each other and parallel to each other. I want to make certain the two smaller tubes...
On some of my drawings that do not require a finish, I've left the default note "NONE"... this has led to some questions despite the roughness Ra value in the general tolerance block. As if the two callouts contradict each other.... ?
So help me understand finish callouts. I’m not a machinist...
I stumbled upon this website selling PDF copies of the 2009 standard for only $49. If purchased directly from the ASME website its $185.
Does anyone have experience with this specific website/pdf, is it legit?

I get quite a few drawings with a diameter symbol on the tolerance in the FCF for a perpendicular callout. I always thought perpendicular was 2 dimensional only….
More specifically, the callouts I am referring to are all on tube parts, where a tube is welded together at 90° and they want to...
I hope this is one of those small things in SW that I’m simply overlooking, but I cannot find a way to remove the excessively huge line gaps in my notes when using flags….
My new company requires flags on notes using the triangle where we put a triangle with number next to or pointing to...
In the past I worked primarily with parts or small assemblies but not weldments, now I work at a company that does a lot of weldment assemblies and so I’m struggling to learn the best flow for solidworks design.
Ideally what I think I want is to build the assembly model from the part models...
When positioning features on a round part, like a flat disk, should one of the features be made a tertiary datum C to clock the location of the rest of the features?
Do not all features orient to the X and Y plane that establish the datum axis, eliminating the need for a tertiary datum to...
Help me understand the use of, and when to use material condition modifiers on datum reference frames.
Is it because the material condition of the DRF needs to accommodate parts as produced at their limits of size? Otherwise in the case of RFS, some parts that are produced within their size...
Question about Coaxial Datum’s and their Features:
What controls the relationship between the two separated cylindrical features that establish the coaxial datum axis? Would the coaxial datum be defined as the simulated axis of the two features regardless of position, if say the two datum...
forgive me in advance on what is probably a basic drafting question. We have a roughness callout in our title block tolerances, but I want to call out a stock material and not have the surface roughness tolerance apply. i.e: I dont want them to do anything with the surface of the stock material...
Questions about cylindrical feature datums shown in a cross section or side view
1) Is it correct to place a datum symbol on a profile line or leader line but not lined up with a dimension line? If correct, how is this different from placing the datum symbol in line with the dimension line of...
Can anyone tell me if there is an ASME fundamental rule that applies to position of features shown on the same centerline with no positional tolerance?
I see many drawings where features are implied on the same centerline but a positional tolerance is not given (or no dimensions from each...
I created an assembly model from three components. I made all three components virtual. I then added two more components as virtual parts to complete the assembly and then created the drawing. When I was finished I closed everything and then copied the assembly model in windows and renamed it to...
What is the current drafting standard for 2D drawings?
Whenever I refer to drawing standards for GDT or general dimensioning I can only find ASME Y14.5 or Y14.100 references but I cannot find any references for ANSI drafting standards yet many companies show ANSI as the standard they follow. I...
I sometimes specify using 18-8 stainless as a material callout where an exact SS is not necessary and I want to give the vendor/machinist options for using material in stock, especially for small qty orders. I realize some of the 18-8's are not as preferred for machining but doable. My logic is...
