Would you consider this beam to be eccentrically loaded?

Is it any worse than any other residential dropped beam? I have a lowered ceiling (not shown) on the left side flush with the bottom of the beam if needed to resolve the torsion. Just curious of other's thoughts w/o the ceiling.

    Simpson BLVZ again.

Revisiting this connector as a contractor wants to use it to attach a deck. How is pullout and side-to-side shear resisted? The tables only give downloads. https://ssttoolbox.widen.net/view/pdf/4xrs6kps1z/C-C-2024_p316-317.pdf?t.download=true Another case of Simpson only solving 1/2 the...

    Steel insert in aluminum mullion

I have a situation where a contractor wants to use tempered glass as an infill panel for a residential deck guardrail. The glass comes with a perimeter aluminum frame that then screws to the surrounding structure. The panel will fasten to the deck surface at the base and wood balusters at the...

    LVL End Nailing

Is this a bad idea or do I just use the NDS end grain factor? Have a contractor supporting one flange of a hanger by nailing into the end of an LVL.

    Lower Ball Joint in Tension

On my 1st Gen Tundra, lower BJ failures are common. So common that it is standard practice to replace them with OEM every 100k miles. Toyota had a recall and improved the joints but the failures persist. Seems the issue is the suspension is designed so the joint is in tension. Spring/shock...

    I-Joist Rafter Connection

Well, y'all know by now, I don't like i-joists. Here is reason #21. I looked at flush, sloped hangers (LSSR2.1Z) and they are like $20 a piece. How do y'all handle this situation? Honestly, money is not an issue on this job, but it is just against my principals for someone to spend $20 on a...

    TJI Issue

Looked at a house today with 20' span, 11 7/8" TJI230 spaced 19.2" O.C. In an open room with vinyl plank flooring, the joists were sagging 1/2". I looked at an old TJI table and they are rated at 19'-11 at this depth and span for L/360. So basically meet minimum code - Yay! In a current TJI...

    Concealed Flange Hangers

How do y'all feel about these types of connections at the end of the beam? The capacity does not seem to be reduced in the Simpson tables. Seems like fastener end distance would be an issue.

    Cantilevered LVL Ridge Bracing

This is a 32 ft. long ridge, 24" LVL beam with a 10 ft. cantilever. Would you consider the bottom "flange" of the LVL braced by the rafters? I am more interested in the negative moment introduced by the cantilever gravity loads rafter than uplift of the ridge as we are not in a high wind area.

Tech. Gathering Data for a PE

I'm remotely involved in a job where a foundation company has given a huge estimate to an elderly woman for underpinning and rot repair. The estimate seems ridiculously high. She has already signed the contract. The foundation company hired an out-of-state firm to do the review. They are...

    Composite Metal Deck

When checking deflection in a shored composite slab (after shoring is removed), Do I use “Id” and E for steel or E for concrete? (I assume E-steel as the numbers don’t seem to make sense otherwise). For long-term deflection, multiply DL deflection x 3? Also, this is going on an exterior terrace...

    "@" OR "AT"

I was reviewing a colleague's drawing. For rebar spacing, it showed, "#4 AT 18" O.C." I typically use "@". I feel like it I was going to spell out "AT" I would show "SPACED" instead. Is there a convention? Thanks

Carb. Jetting using an A/F gage

I need to adjust the jetting on a new build for a 125cc Honda Navi. Started as 110cc and added a cam, pipe and carb and bore. I just installed an A/F gage on it. If for example, it says I am at 11:1 at WOT, and am running a 110 Main jet, should I try a 11/12.5 x 110 = 98 (say 100) main jet...

    Adhesive Anchor Install Temps

Seems like the Acrylic based systems have a wider range of substrate install temps than the Epoxies do. I never knew this. Do any of you specify different systems in the Winter versus Summer? The Simpson rep informed me the lumber yards are supposed to educate the contractors on this and sell...

    Composite Residential Joists

Any body used these yet? https://www.owenscorning.com/en/composites/product/structural-lumber#specifications-and-literature Has an E of 350,000 so pretty flimsy though has a decent Fb. What other caveats are there? Might as well combine with some PT PSL beams and have a sagfest LOL.

    HP15C

Did anyone purchase one of these re-released models? I bought one in 2023 (14 months ago) and the keyboard is already failing. I noticed that some keystrokes were not consistently registering. 2 months out of warranty. They said I can send it in for a "software update" that may help. Oh yea, I...

    More Engineered Beam Issues?

This is an 8 ft. span, 3 1/2x9 1/4 beam in the crawlspace of a 2 year old home. It supports 12 ft. trib of floor framing (trussed roof). There are some cracks in the sheetrock near this beam. 1) What material is this? It looks like crap. It appears to be one 3 1/2" wide ply. Kinda looks like an...

    Residential Heat Pump Water Heater

How are these things efficient if they are inside your house.? Ok, free A/C in the Summer. But in the winter, they are just transferring the load to the HVAC system. Maybe they make sense if they are in an un-heated garage?
