When the double chord style truss is used, is it the intent that the panel joints occur at truss centerline? Or perhaps they are intended to occur over the left or right chord?

I'm checking some existing glulams, and, ran across the 1986 NDS commentary on 3.2.1 attached, which as far as I can tell, is still appropriate today. I had overlooked this; it is new to me and puzzles me. I ask your help in understanding and appropriately applying.
The key item is...
I have a double cantilevered glulam girder with 9' left cantilever and 9' right cantilever and 35.5' between columns for a total length of 53.5'
The moment diagrams for 3 cases (no snow) is attached, case 1 - TL everywhere, case 2 - TL at span (between columns) and DL only at cantilever (and...

For determining connections for an RTU to an isolation curb and the isolation curb to the roof, would one use R=2.0 (or 2.5) and then multiply by factor of 2 per footnote (b)?

I have a steel joist with calcs (from manufacturer) showing Fy=50ksi for webs and chords.
Pls recommend steel spec should I use to get Fy=50 ksi for reinforcement pieces:
1. round rods
2. angles
3. 1/8" to 1" plates
I'm checking a bowstring truss with a ceiling framed into the lower chord. What live load at ceiling would you use and would you apply it simultaneously with roof live load? It looks uninhabitable and I see no signs of storage use.
I am reinforcing a 4x roof beam, under a nailed diaphragm, by sistering a couple of microlams, designing it as a composite section such that the neutral axis is lowered, etcetera...

I have some graduates employed and am considering covering the cost of an EIT prep course. Could you please provide a recommended study course? It's been a number of years since I was there.
A client is considering replacing the HVAC on his metal building roof framed with Z purlins similar to the attached sketch.
I would sure appreciate some advice for this, specifically:
A) direction to literature for typical section properties
B) insight as to typical steel grade(s)
c) typical...
Hi,
I have a small structural practice in California near to one of the California state colleges. Business looks like it may pick up some and I'm considering seeking a freshly minted no experience BS engineering degreed person on board. I could use the help and I know for sure that working at...
Would you consider 2x12@16" roof joists flush framed with "U" style hangers into both faces of a 5.125x28.5 cantilevered roof glulam as providing bracing against compression face buckling?

In preparation for a single story retail building inspection in a few days, I came across the attached detail in the partial plans provided to me. The roof diaphragm is plywood or osb and is about 20' above the slab. The beam shown is a 6 3/4" x 33" beam. I don't yet know the column size. I...
Hello,
My client is wishing to add some volume to the ceiling area in a room for a local clubhouse. His concept is shown in the attached sketch which essentially is the removal of the bottom chord and the modification of the webs of the wood trusses.
I'd like to help him out but I'm having...
The HVAC curb was roofed in before the puddle welds from the deck to the new steel framing was performed.
Is there a way to complete this connection from below the deck?
It is in a region of low wind and seismicity.
Thanks!
I am visiting a site soon in the aouthwest non-snow region where the client says he has measured a permanent deflection of 4“ in roof Glulam beams. Ponding has been an issue and he intends to repair the roof as required.
I did not think that Glulam would deflect that far without springing...
Hi,
I am to perform a site visit on a building with the above size glulams spaced 8' o.c. in San Diego to observe what the client says is a 4" sag and has been ponding. I have a framing plan with this size, dated 1962, but no specifications for these beams. Most glulams I have seen in the West...
