So I am connecting W beams to HSS Columns. The boss calls out Direct Weld moment connections with a shear plate and I can't seem to find any explanation on the size of the plate( in the beams span direction) and on what the groove weld should be, or in other words, what the gap size should be...
Iv'e spoken to some local steel fabricators that claim they fabricate their own joists for many projects as opposed to going with an SJI certified manufacturer. I have an issue on a project where joists can't make it on time and locals are offering to fabricate. The joists are 65' lengths and...
So Im attaching a cantilever canopy I'm running. It seems to good to be true and I was wondering whether anyone might look at it and give me some pointers. The canopy only extends (cantilevers) 5 ft and is attached to a masonry wall that has vertical reinforced concrete fill every 32 inches on...
I keep getting instabilities. I have reviewed the Risa videos and attempted to manage the pin pin connections along with attempting to make the model sturdier with shorter on center spacing. Any help is appreciated. I can relieve one node but another just keeps coming up...
So I was looking into getting risa for myself, my boss owns it but only risa 3d and foundation and old versions, and really have a problem with just "renting" the software. I've read many threads regarding the pros and cons, but I just cant spend the money and in the end have nothing. So I'd...
So attached is a model I did in Risa V13. I have gone back and forth about how to model the loads. In the end I applied member area loads as opposed to plate loads. With plate loads, the transverse beams all have to be hot rolled W8x18 for them to work. IF I keep the Cee Channel...
Can Risa 3d do point loads on plates? I'm modeling a frame with a rigid plate on top, such as a book shelf on a wall with angles, but I can not model a point load on it. I can't use a surface load because I want an eccentricity from load to center of plate. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Looking at IBC table 2306.2(2), in finding appropriate unit shears and fastener spacing, I see the table refers to "14 gage staples", is there a section for equivalent nails to designate? Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Anyone know of a supplier for FRP Tendons? It can be Aramid or Carbon, even Glass but I doubt they even make them. And not to be confused with Bars, which are not for prestress applications, but tendons. I guess someone who supplies bars could know of tendons as well. Any help is appreciated.

Can anyone guide me to a good source for Prestressing Jack assembly? I need to prestress some sample slabs with Steel, GFRP and CFRP, but I can not find a good place that explains how the bars can be gripped on the jack end. Would I simply use a wedge? If so how can I adapt it to a hollow jack...
What would be the best way to model this pedestrian bridge?
First I modeled plates, which you can see in the pic, and from the stresses and moments I can go to design some reinforcement manually. Then I assumed a beam that was 5" thick, 7' wide, and aprox 3.33 ft long. Of course this beam...
If I were to design a steel joist. And by this I mean structurally design the joist, not lay them out for a building, but actually designing the top chord, web and bottom chord. What would be the code checks to follow from the AISC code book?
For a K series joist I want to use the following...
Hi everyone, for the first time my Boss is giving me the lead on a presentation to a school board on the recommended approach for restoration of various concrete sections in several schools. Its not a whole lot of information to be honest. My boss just told me to make sure and not get too...
attached is an image of the section for steel panel/plate walls. They will be load bearing and at a 45 degree angle with a plate embedment to a concrete footing. Not a whole lot of load, just a typical 20 psf and self weight of purlins and beams (steel). I am considering getting Design Guide 20...
Hi everyone, First let me say that I have been reading a lot of the posts in here regarding single angle design. I have looked into the steel manual and examples. I just would like if someone can help me clarify one thing. Let me explain, I am adding 2 single angles of equal legs to a girder...
I have a Girder spanning 46'. This girder is a 6 2"x10" member spliced together by a split ring and I assume shear plate. The girder holds up a second floor, a floor consisting of 2"x10" joists for decking. The joist spans 20' and are 16" O.C. Yes this floor is a problem, but in being accurate...
Hi, I have recently began working for a structural engineering firm. We are preparing a recommendation for an old 2 story building(over 80 yrs old) and I've been given the task of preparing the documents and analyzing the systems that we inspected. However, I am not comfortable with my rough...
