    Interesting CVT transmission patent

Hi I was online reading about CVT types and stumbled upon attached Patent application for a unique CVT idea from 1983! it looks feasible but I don't seem to find any actual application for it. This is surprising as it seems to solve common problem with current CVTs especially regarding high...

life expectency of hydraulic cylinder and piston seals

Hi I notice that seals on hydraulic cylinder fail quite often which gives you the impression they can't live for long; however when you look at piston seals used in tranmissions or brakes you find that they can live for 30 years or more without servicing! why is that the case? it really has...

    positive engagment clutch advantages

Why don't we see much use of positive engagment clutches in automobiles or other equipment? They can eliminate the wear issue commonly occuring with friction clutches which in my experience is behind most tranmission failures. They don't release alot of heat as well.

    angled surface to ball connection

Hi all I'm having this confusion about a certain system where I'm not sure how it would act in either of two ways. Basically system is a weight of one Kilogram falling down and interacting with a body of neglegible weight. the two bodies connect together and start travelling down at the same...

Unique rack an pinion system with fixed and movable rack

Hi There is a special rack and pinion system that uses pinion travel along a fixed rack to drive a second rack coupled to it for double the distance and hence double the speed. In other words the movable rack will travel double the distance that is traveled by the pinion. Now as per my...

bushing material for sea water pump

Hi I'm looking to buy a new material suitable for making bushings for sea water centrifugal pumps. I looked alot online but it is not mentioned clearly if specified materials work well for this exact application. it should be noted that centrifugal pumps have high rotating speeds. Regards

Power required to run a generator

Hello everyone it is my understanding that all generators or alternators run at 50 or 60 hz speed so what is the reason for the diffrent energy levels required to run different sizes of generators? does the increased generator size require more power to run at the same speed or is it also...

effect of rectangular plate width on buckling resistance

Greetings everyone I was looking for the buckling equation of rectangular plates on supports and found bryans plate buckling equation. what i find to be strange is that increasing the width decreases the buckling strength. Take as an example a plate fixed vertically with one of its shorter...

    bending case of deck structure

I'm looking at calculating bending stress in deck structure caused by by uniform bending moment due to winch twisting. I approximated the bending case into the following schematic so hope anyone can help with the bending moment formula for this case. I will consider this plate as clamped from...

Special case in rectangular plate bending

Greetings I'm dealing with a case where a rectangular plate is subjected to a bending moment applied mid span of the plate along the shorter edge. I tried looking for a formula for this case but couldn't find any so hope you can help

    roarks formula confusion

Greatings everyone I'm trying to get how roark in his book "formulas for stress and strain" got the stress equation for bending stresses in rectangular plates. I noticed that the equation is composed of the moment formula divided by just T^2 so how did he arrive at this result. I hope you can...

    Marine winch foundation

Hi there everyone I'm working on calculating the stresses in a winch foundation installed on the main deck of a barge. the pull on the winch causes both axial and bending stresses in the foundation under the winch so here is the problem. I looked hard for an equation that deals with critical...
