I'm a Canadian Professional Engineer who will be challenging the NCEES FE Mechanical Exam in the near future.
I'm looking into buying a book to prepare myself for this exam since I graduated from University way back in 2005 so it's been a while since I've looked at a lot of this material...
I've been using the attached spreadsheet to perform an elastic analysis on annular rings. I can manage to get a thickness that works so that: θs = θc and θb = 0 with a reasonable stress, however I find the majority of the time I can't get the inside projection to work out to match code...
I just recently bought "Design of Weldments" and "Design of Welded Structures" by Omer Blodgett and I noticed in his chapters on Torsional Loading he talks about using "Torsional Resistance" rather than polar moment of inertia to calculate torsional stress and deflection. (Chapter 3.6 in...
In the case of having an open top API 650 tank with an agitator bridge. After calculating what the reaction loads will be where the beams sit at the top of the tank, we have to determine what is required to support those beams. (Either nothing or we need to add a vertical shell stiffener under...
Has anyone ever tried to solve for reaction loads on a semi trailer that has tandem axles? I've been treating it as a statically indeterminate beam to get my 3 reactions (at the kingpin and each of the axles).
I've been solving this using Clapeyron's theorem (3 moment equation) and I keep...
I'm designing a tank with the following parameters:
D = 17.2 m
H = 18 m
Hliquid = 17.38 m
SG = 1.48
CA = 2mm
According to API 650 Clause 5.5.3, an elastic analysis must be made to calculate the required thickness of the annular ring. I'm using Kroon's Method to calculate the thickness, and...
Anybody know how useful AISC Design Guide 25 is? It's for Frame Design using Web-Tapered Members. I'm just wondering if it's a worthwhile book to get to design frames using web-tapered members.
Does anyone know of a minimum distance for a telltale hole to the edge of a repad for API 650 tanks?
All I can see in the code is along the horizontal center line. There has to be a minimum edge distance though. There's no way you can't put them right on the edge of the repad.
Quick question: Are you allowed to use a steel backing bar to weld horizontal seams in an API 650 tank shell?
This would be without taking the backing bar off, just leaving it in. I can't find anywhere in API 650 where it says you can't do this, but it just doesn't seem right to me.
Here's...
I need to design a baffle in an API 650 tank. The tank is 47' Dia X 24' High. There is a baffle inside the tank which is 20' high by 38' long welded to the bottom plates and on one side against the inside of the tank shell. The baffle will never hold all the liquid on one side, but will instead...
I'm looking to buy myself a book on geodesic dome roof design. I specifically want to look into this in case anyone asks me to design an aluminum geodesic dome roof for a large diameter API 650 tank. I'm not just looking for a book that will show me how to calculate the proper geometry, but I...
I design many API 650 storage tanks. I have some customers who insist on my crews bracing the tank shell during erection prior to us having the top stiffener and roof in place. Does anyone know how to calculate whether a tank shell will fold in on itself in the wind before the top stiffener is...
