335.1(c)refers to the design plane when talking about flange misalignment. What is exactly the definition of design plane? Is it the plane of the mating face?
Customer wants to put a slot on a 50" long 3/4" SCH40 pipe that is about 30" long and .25" diameter. I told them that this will take away its B31.3 compliance, but now they need proof in the book. Will slotting the pipe take away code compliance? How can I prove this? The design pressure and...
Is it acceptable to drill a hole into the neck of a weld neck flange and put a branch connection if the reinforcement is sufficient? The code of construction is ASME B31.3 and the flange is ASME B16.5. I assume this isn't allowed.
Hi,
Please see photo of a 2" 600# RFWN flange surface. This piping unit is intended to be built to ASME B31.3 and the flanges meet ASME B16.5 which B31.3 references. A spiral wound gasket would be used to mate to another flange.
My question:
Does having weld metal on the flange surface...
This unit shall be built to ASME B31.1. See the picture that shows the spool piece . The small flange is a socketweld and the larger one is a blind flange. There is an intermediate small pipe. I want to know if the distance between welds is an issue. If the closeness of the welds is an issue...
Designing a vessel to Section VIII Div. 1 and I need to calculate the pressure rating of this component.
It says in B16.11 that the pressure rating shall be computed as straight seamless pipe of equivalent material.Straight pipe MAWP is calulated in Section VIII Div.1 under UG-27 where it...
Hello,
It states that hx (height of extruded outlet) must be equal to or greater than rx (radius of curvature). There seems to be a gray area in determining the hx. Can I count the weld as part of the height of extrusion?
Thanks...
We're doing extruded outlets instead of a pipe to pipe saddle weld now. From what I gathered, ASME B31.3 Paragraph 304.3.4 is the only paragraph that I need to use for calculations. Those are reinforcement calculations.
The extrusion process thins the pipe at the saddle and stirrup a little...
We make magnetic level instrumentation for storage tanks and pressure vessels and are wondering if S-stamp certification is possible.
1. After reading the Preamble, is it correct to say that our instruments are classified as boiler external piping?
2. From what I'm gathering, the technical...
I can't seem to find the location in the ASME B31.3 codebook that states the weld requirements for the weld between a branch pipe and a reinforced branch fitting (weldolet). Anyone have experience with this?

Nowhere in the B31.3 code does it state that I cannot directly attach a B16.5 WN flange to an extruded outlet header. Can I get away with omitting the branch pipe that would typically be used between extruded outlet header and flange?
Hi,
If I was to fabricate an extruded outlet header, there is going to be some wall thinning of the run pipe. Estimates I've seen are 7-15% of original thickness. Are these thinnings negligible when designing for run pipe internal pressure? THANKS.
It has been told by my Authorized Inspector that if you blow a hole into a 16.5 flange (for the purposes of attaching a nozzle) that it is no longer considered 16.5. At this point, flat head calculations of UG-34 and UG-39 must be used.
How do I calculate the MAWP for this part since it is no...
Is the ASTM F2014-00 standard for non-reinforced extruded tee connections for piping applications referenced in the ASME B31.1 or B31.3 codes at all? Could you tell me if there is a list of standards in the B31.1 and B31.3 books for this?
I'm using TP316 welded pipe to construct the cylindrical portion of a vessel. Quick question:
Assuming all notes have been met for the material, am I limited to the stress values for the product form of wld. pipe? Or can I use the stress values under the product form of Smls & wld. pipe?
If I used a flued opening and then butt welded a pipe to the flange end, would the attached pipe need UG-45 calculations? It wouldn't be a rated part. Here's a picture to better show my situation:
UG-39(b)(1) shows the required reinforcement area. How does one calculate the area available in the case for flat heads? Is it the same as Figure UG-37.1?
once you drill a hole into a B16.5 Blind Flange it removes the standard. This means that this bolted blind flange needs to be calculated as a flat plate. So I have a 1" hole in the flat plate (blind flange) and it is considered a small opening per UG-36 (c)(3)(-a).
UG-39(a) states that the...
Instead of a straight pipe as a nozzle, could a concentric reducer be used as a nozzle? If yes, when performing nozzle thickness requirements of UG-45, which diameter would be used? HELP IS HIGHLY APPRECIATED
