Why do engineers flip the last diagonal in trusses?

Hi All, Please can someone shed some light on a peculiarity with regards to pratt trusses. I've often seen the last diagonal on either end flipped, i.e. instead of it being in tension it is forced to be in compression. What is the rational behind this? Thanks.

    Minimum blast profile gauge

Hi All, Does anyone know if there is a standard "blast gauge thickness" in microns associated with an SA2 specification? Thanks, _________________ Jones & Wagener www.jaws.co.za

    Pipe Bedding Classes

Hi All, Please can someone shed some light on the UK descriptions of S1 to S5 and B1 and B2 Bedding Classes for pipes? Crawling through the web I gather that "S" is a complete surround and "B" is a cradle (180 degrees). What do the suffix numbers 1 to 5 (for S) and 1 to 2 (for B) refer to...

    Fatigue Design Design Tool

Hi All, Does any know of a design tool to assist with fatigue design, specifically to EC3 1-9? Thanks.

    Simple over-turning question

Hi All, Simple question (hopefully). If there is a continuous system with a discreet point load, over what length would it be reasonable to calculate over-turning stability? For e.g. a rigid wall that is continuous and has a continuous overturning force induced by soil pressure. This is easy...

    Beam-to-Beam Connection (Simple question)

Hi All, In this very short 30 second video from steelconstruction.info (UK based organisation). Two Beam-to-beam connections are shown. The second detail has the incoming beam connecting directly to the flanges of the supporting beam. My questions are: 1. Will this connection induce torsion...

Why do we only care about the lowest modes of Vibration

Hi All, Hope everyone is Covid19 safe and well. I'm doing a dynamic analysis check on a foundation supporting a motor. There are many guidelines and codes out there specify how far out your natural frequency needs to be from the forcing frequency. My question is, why do we only consider the...

    Structural Steel at Elevated Temperatures

Hi All, We're busy designing a structure using Grade 355JR structural steel (I think the equivalent in the US would be A572 grade 50). The structure will be subjected to an elevated temperature of around 250 deg C (482 deg F). Other than designing for reduced mechanical properties: yield of...

Limiting concrete crack widths due to shrinkage

Dear All, We are busy designing a large reinforced concrete structure that sits within a return water dam as part of an Ash Handling Facility. The retaining walls are thick (varies from 500 to 1400mm thick). The thickness is governed by a number of criteria of which I will not go into. Part of...

Lapping of reinforcing bars with different spacings

Hi All, I understand it is good practice and will make fixing of reinforcing a great deal simpler on site, but is it really required (from any code point of view) to maintain spacing of reinforcing over a change in moment? i.e. In a wall to wall corner I require 16mm bars horizontally @ 150...

    Post Tension Circular Structure

Hi All, Without having to re-invent the wheel, does anyone know of a shareware spreadsheet/software that computes the PT requirements of a circular structure for given hoop forces? Yes, this can be done "relatively" easily but if someone has done the leg work and is willing to share, it would...

Structural Engineering Riddle of the Day

Dear All, Perhaps this question warrants a major refresh of classic structural engineering mechanics (speaking for myself). Why does the stiffness of the horizontal beam in system 1 have absolutely no bearing on the moment distribution in the vertical elements? i.e. the vertical elements in...

    Revit for non-building structural engineering

Hi All, We are going through the process of switching from 2D to 3D drafting - yes it is late, but better late than never. Does anyone out there have specific experience in using Revit in a non-building structures environment? If so, what has your experience been using the software and would...

    Strand 7 - Online Editor

Hi All, Does anyone out there know if it is possible to export the contents of the online editor in strand7 to excel? I realise that manual copy/paste of the cells contents is possible, but this does not apply to the geometry description cells (eg. plate number). Thanks, _________________...

    Plate Element Thickness Overlap Error

Hi All, I am busy modelling a concrete tower with overall dimensions of 5.2m x 5.2m x 40m high. The walls vary in thickness and shape. At one of the corners of the tower, the attached image shows the geometry thereof. The centre lines of the tower walls are shown in red, yellow, green and...

Solid Edge Viewer Not Allowing Sections

Hi All, We are currently on an old (ancient) version of Solid Edge (version 18 I believe). I have to present something to a client tomorrow and was hoping to take along my laptop with the Free solid edge viewer. The latest version of the viewer opens the file perfectly but will not allow me...

    Strand7 Reaction Forces

Hi All, I very well may be missing something, but I cannot find out how to show nodal reactions in Strand7? I've tried the following routes: 1. Opening the results viewer and selecting the "node tab" - the only tab at the bottom of the window is for "displacement". I don't see "reaction"...

    International Collaboration

My question is, has anyone requested work to be done by consulting engineers in other countries where the currency exchange rate can be successfully hedged to offer more competitive rates locally. The consulting market in South Africa is currently going through a bit a of lull and I was...
