    SCL for ratcheting assessment

TGS4 please help me understand an issue regarding SCL's as per VIII-2 Part 5. In one of your previous posts you mentioned something that I have doubt if I got the point or not. It is in thread794-412084 Does this mean that the only valid points to be accounted for membrane or bending stresses...

    Post Forming Heat Treatment Requirement

Dear All I was trying to understand the requirements for PostFabrication Heat Treatment of a pressure vessel. My problem is that I do not know the strains in Table UG-79-1 are in per cent or do I have to multiply it by 100 to obtain the per cent of the strain.

PWHT of a cladded pressure vessel

Dear All I have a problem with the PWHT of a vessel when it comes to its overlay. I want to know the following in the above cautionary note from ASME. What grades of stainless steel are stabilized and which ones are unstabilized? What are the temperature ranges of carbide participation? Can I...

    Creep and Fatigue (Ratchet) interaction

Dear All I was hoping to find some method according to ASME BPVC VIII-2 in order to find a way of evaluating some equipment for their fatigue strength in high temperatures. However, I failed in the first step by reading the article 5.1.1.3. What can I do in this situation? Warm Regards

    Allowable Stress in Creep Condition

Dear All Can you please help me understand what the difference is between average and minimum stresses in cases 2 and 3 above?

    Fireproofing on supports only

Dear All I wonder why in many engineering specs there is fireproofing on supports and not on the vessel walls. For examples it happens a lot that the skirt has a 50 mm concrete fireproof and there is no fireproof on the vessel wall at all. Any explanations? Warm Regards

    Leonardo da Vinci and BPVC

Dear all Just out of curiosity, what is the relation between the da Vinci work and BPVC? Why did they choose that for the cover page?

    Saddle Allowable Stresses in VIII-2

Dear All, I have some questions regarding allowable stresses as per ASME BPVC VIII-2 when it comes to saddles stresses. According to 4.15.3.5, the circumferential compressive membrane plus bending stress is denoted by σ7. The allowable stress for this stress is mentioned in 4.15.3.5 (f) to be...

    Impact test energy

Dear All, Please help me understand some points regarding Impact testing required energy as per ASME BPVC. First question is what is meant by minimum specified yield strength in Figure UG-84.1? Is it the value specified by the code in II-D or is it the value obtained from mechanical test...

    Elongation Due To Rolling

Dear All They are telling me (in the workshop) that if they cut the plate length based on the mean radius, there will be some extra length after rolling. Is there a formula or a reference to estimate that? I want to know how to calculate exact length of a plate before rolling to a specified...

Exclusion From the Scope of ASME BPVC VIII-1

Dear All, I have some doubts regarding the scope of work in VIII-1. The introduction part of the code says that some classes vessels are not included in the scope of Division 1. Among those excluded is the following: What is the logic behind this exclusion? To my eyes this class of vessel is...

    Primary bending stress

Dear All Can anybody help me understand the occasions that primary bending stresses occur? I tried table 5.6 in ASME BPVC VIII-2 but it seemed a little paradoxical in some ways. Try the highlighted cases in the image.

    Ratcheting VS Incremental Plastic Strain

Dear All, I am trying to understand the difference between two situations. Please help me understand this. In ASME BPVC VIII-2, the definition of ratcheting is as follows: In the definition provided by the code a sustained load is superimposed by a cyclic displacement controlled load . What...

Div-2 VS Div-1--- Which one is more reasonable?

Dear All I have a basic question regarding design as per ASME BPVC VIII. I want to know that if VIII-2 allows higher allowable values for stresses in design then why don't we just fabricate all pressure equipment as per Div-2 and forget about Div-1? Suppose that I am in the position of a...

    entities with no volume elements

Dear all I am using Ansys workbench 16.1. does anybody have any idea how to remove the following error: the mesh of the following entities have no volume elements what is the cause of this error and what should be done to remove the issue? Warm Regards

Excluding Peak Stresses From FEA Results

Dear All As per ASME BPVC Sec. VIII-2 Par. 5.5.6 in order to perform ratcheting analysis using an elastic method, it is necessary to calculate primary plus secondary stress range and peak stresses must be excluded in the process. When the FEA results of a linear elastic model are available, the...

Base Ring Crippling Criteria with Tailing Beam

Dear All I am trying to understand the calculations for base ring in Pressure Vessel Design Manual by D. R. Moss (Ed. 4). in chapter 10 procedure 10-5 the base ring is checked so that there will be no failure during lifting of the equipment. But the calculations basis cannot be understood at...

    Clarification for ASME Sec. VIII-1 U-2 (g)

Dear all, Occasionally I am asked to perform calculations for equipment as per ASME Sec.VIII Div-1 and they want me to perform calculations using U-2 (g). Till now I automatically went to some other codes or Div.2 DBR or DBA and followed the instructions provided by these codes. I just started...
