I need to heat steel up to around 640C for about 30 - 60 minutes through induction heating. At that point I will allow it to come to room temp naturally. I cannot do this in a vacuum nor protective atmosphere (gas purging the system). Are there other ways I can prevent oxidation?
Which steels...
Are there standard equations to determine the distance to keep away from a rotating drum? I have a metal drum that is rotating at a somewhat high RPM. I assume there'd be some calculation on if a piece of this drum, or a fastener on this drum, were to release at the max RPM, what would its...
I have an application where I'm limited to ~500W and need a geared motor that can provide at least 10 RPM at 90 N-m. Seems Maxon and Micromo cap at around 20 N-m. I found something on midwest motions, but the form factor is something like 3" dia x 12" length. Is there any other brands I can look...
Are there any recommendations on how to machine soft aluminum without lubricant, specifically 6061-O? What are the recommended methods?
Found this post, but it's from 10 years ago, and maybe the cutting tool technology has changed since then...
I'm looking at the Tensile Yield Strength of 6061-T6 at various temperatures and found in MMPDS two tables that are different from one another. Which table would you use and why? Their descriptions are basically the same, but the chart is completely different.
I'm using MMPDS ver 10 (1 April...
I have a 2" dia shaft that has two ball bearings on both ends at about 20" apart. I have been trying to find what sort of misalignment I can get away with, but fail to find anything concrete. The bearing mfr does not give misalignment allowance so I'm wondering what standard practice is?
I have a small face mounted DC motor that has 3x 2.05mm dia, 7mm depth holes. I am wonder what is a good rule of thumb for the depth of pressing in dowel pins.
I tried some googling, but haven't come up with a definitive answer.
Our 3PH AC motor is making a weird noise. This is the motor in question: http://raise.rockwellautomation.com/RAConfig/resultsComponents.asp?CID=83F8F5F0A92A4CBCA447F88026C621A4
What are the typical causes for noise.

I currently have a 2HP, 3PH, 60Hz AC motor, that is connected directly to a 12" dia drum. In the past, I would pull a cable that is wrapped around it with 2 lbs of tension (torque of 1 ft-lb). I have a new project that I am working on that requires a 10.75" dia drum pulling a cable that will...

I've been reading through a bunch of these forums without creating an account and now I came upon my own dilemma that needs some outside help.
We're modeling a hybrid cable, fiber optic and a few electrical conductors with a strength member. The model is in air from a host vehicle traveling at...
