Building vertical braced bay eccentric to wind load

Hi all, Please can you help? I'm working thru a critiqued past paper of the IStructE exam, see attached. (ref https://www.istructe.org/resources/exam-preparation/critiqued-exam-answer-script-february-2023/) pg 26 shows the calculation of the bracing loads. The proposed solution for lateral...

Shear capacity of an end plate connection

Hi, Can anyone offer a reason why you can use the ultimate strength of steel (fu,p) when checking the net section of an end plate for shear? Rather than the tensile strength of steel (fy,p) for the gross section... The extract attached is from SCI Simple Joints to Eurocode 3. Thanks, Steve...

Scaffold pad allowable bearing on concrete

Hi all, I am verifying a scaffold design and can't find any guidance for allowable bearing on concrete. The pads are 12" by 18" and result in a bearing pressure of 69kN/m2. For base plate design I would usually limit to 0.4* fcu = 0.4* 40kN/m2 = 16kN/m2. Does this apply in the same way or...

Bearing strength and compressive strength of concrete

Hello all Can someone please explain the difference between bearing strength and compressive strength? I just don't get it. In the British code BS 8110 the bearing strength is 0.4*comp. strength and I use it for checking under the compression zone for base plates etc but I just don't get why I...

    Unused bolt holes

Is it good practice to fill any unused drill holes in a member? Do you simply fill with weld and grind back flush? I'm thinking low risk areas: flanges where there's no moment, web where there's low shear etc.

    Block shear

Hi all, Can I one bolt connection experience block shear or does it only apply to multiple rows? Thanks

    Torsionally restrained connection detail

Hi all, I've got a newly applied torsional moment to an RHS which is currently fasted to a PFC on both ends with a single bolt. Please see attached sketch. If I attach a flat bar to the top of the RHS and tie it back to the PFC does this provide torsional restraint? I have been looking at...

    IStructE exam

Hello Is anybody out there preparing for the IStructE exam? I'm planning to take it later in the year and am looking for a study buddy to talk through practice exams and general preparation. Thanks

    Excel is evil

Hello everyone I just watched an interesting talk on youtube by Colin Caprani who's a lecturer in structural engineering. He discusses the problems with spreadsheets from the perspective of an academic but a lot of this translates to practising engineers too. I find checking spreadsheets...

Buckling length for beam hanging from rods

Hi all, I have a beam hanging from rods as shown in the attached sketch. What do I take for the buckling length? The load is on the top compression flange so I'm considering it destabilizing, the compression flange has no lateral restraint and no torsional restraint. BS 5950-1 table 13 gives a...

    Concrete strength

Hello all, What is the best way to increase the strength of concrete if you are using the same sand and aggregate? Thanks

    No slump concrete

Hello all I am working on a site where they are using a concrete mix of 1 cement 1.5 sand 3 aggregate and water:cement ratio of 0.4. The mix is workable enough for columns, slabs etc when vibrated with a poker and the visible quality is good. It is achieving 20N/mm2 and 24N/mm2 for 3- and 7-day...

    Coal boiler (ash types)

Hello all, I'm trying to find a source of fly ash for use as a cement replacement in concrete. I have been contacting anyone I can find who is using a coal boiler. One of these is a brewery which produces 15t of ash per day however, they have told me that they only have one source of ash and it...

    Coal boiler (ash types produced)

Hello all, I'm trying to find a source of fly ash for use as a cement replacement in concrete. I have been contacting anyone I can find who is using a coal boiler. One of these is a large plant which produces 15t of ash per day however, they have told me that they only have one source of ash...

    Non-shrink grout alternatives

Hi I am working on a project where I would use non-shrink grout for the detail on the attached image to fill the pocket and the underside of the baseplate. Unfortunately non shrink grout is unavailable. I have looked at dry packing ( but I feel like it won't by fluid enough to fill the pockets)...
