As the title, if friction between backfilling soil in tank ring wall and soil base is considered in resisting sliding, how to determine the friction coefficient?
As per Chapter 5.6.4, PIP STE03020, there should be MT value, torsion due to seismic load, to calculate the equivalent bending moment.
For stability check, we consider ring wall as an isolated foundation.
So maximum pressure is equal to MsE/W. W is section modulus.
Than MT could be obtained.
But...
When calculating Fundamental Time Period for Platform on horizontal vessel and Foundation Pedestal, Ta, using Chapter 12.8, ASCE 7-10.
Ta=Ct*Hn^x
For Platform, Hn is height from grating to grout(top of pedestal), and seismic force acts at platform beam level.
For Pedestal, Hn is height from...
Are there any examples in SI unit for Tank Ring Wall Design,Horizontal Vessel and Exchanger Foundation Design?
Books, guidelines or articles are required to learn.
Recently I have been reading PIP 03020. I will post some threads to clear my inquiries.
I am sorry that I posted this thread in "Civil General Discussion" Part. But I don't know how to delete that thread. Following are my questions.

Recently I have been reading PIP 03020. I will post some threads to clear my inquiries.
1. Code mentioned, for load combination about hydrotest, soil bearing capacity is allowed to be increased by geotechnical engineer, will this be written in geotechnical report?
Or for more common wind load...
I am a young, but not very young, civil engineer.
Last month it was the first time I had designed a tank ringwall foundation.
In our calculation report, it is assumed that, weight of shell is transferred to ringwall only, while weight of product on bottom plate and bottom plate itself will be...
I am sorry that I started another thread in mechanical forum for the same issue.
In API 650, wind load is calculated based on wind speed calibrated based on ASCE 7-05. Wind speed/pressure is converted by a coefficient 0.78/0.6 in case wind speed calibrated based on ASCE 7-16 is provided.
Now...
In API 650, there is a coefficient 0.78 for wind speed or 0.6 for wind pressure, to convert wind load calibrated based on ASCE 7-10/16 to that calibrated based on ASCE 7-05.
The main difference between ASCE 7-05 and ASCE 7-10/16 is:
1. MRI-50 years for ASCE 7-05, 300/700/1700/3000 years for ASCE...
In API 650-2016, wind speed is by default determined as per ASCE 7-05.
If ASCE 7-10 is used, wind speed shall be multiplied by 0.8, or wind pressure shall be multiplied by 0.6.
Why?
If ASCE 7-10 is used, is Importance Factor is required or not?
In ASCE 7-10, importance factor is 1, use...
I am a young civil engineer.
I use following equation:
Expansion or Shrinkage △= ε * L.
Among which, α is the expansion or shrinkage(inches) happening per 100 feet, at a temperature more than 7O°F.
If maximum design temperature is 7O°F, ε=0.
But in China, if maximum temperature of material in...
PIP specifies that Bundle load shall not be considered for fin exchangers(double pipe exchangers).
Stacked exchanger look like 2 big pipes.
So I have above quiry.
ACI 318-08, Chapter 11.4.7.9, Vs shall not be taken greater than 0.66*sqrt(f'c)*bw*d.
This limitation is missing in ACI 318-14, is it still applicable or not?
I am a young civil engineer and recently I begin to learn to design foundation of horizontal vessel.
But I have some confusion.
The title is reaction, but for civil, we focus on load applied to top of foundation from vessel.
My confusion is:
1. Usually, vendors specify that horizontal force in...
Recently I have been updating a spread excel sheet to calculate crack width.
But I failed to find the long equations in any textbook.
These equations are used to calculate stress in steel reinforcement.
