I understand TJI are not made to work with collar.
In typical gable roof I used TJI-9.5" for longer span and cheaper price compared to sawn lumber.
Ceiling joists (red) then run parallelly with TJI and coil strap (green) at ridge beam. So far it has been oked, approved by AHJ a few time.

Hi structure engineers,
I ve been told roof hip carries half the load of supported rafters.
As in this pix, I can see it carries half the load of red rafters, and other half of the blue rafters, approximately. So, correct if I m wrong, half and half is one.
By geometry, it seems the hip...
hi everyone
On wind diagram zone 3 and 5 i have both negative and positive values of 25psf.
In middle of a flat roof i have rafters tie to a ledger that in turn ties to a bearing wall.
To simplify, if tributary area 500sf, A35 tie =1kip,
My calc : total wind load 25#*2*500sf/1kip=25000/1000=25...
On the architecture license exam, lateral part, question: on a 13 ft long wall that has 606#/ft unit shear, how many sill bolts of 727# capacity to be placed and at what spacing.
My answer is (606*13/727)=11 bolts
Spacing = (13*12)/11+1=13" o.c.
Is it odd that the spacing being that close ? My...
In our architecture license study, seismic tests around flat roof building where we multiply the chord length x building tributary depth x 15lbs to get the chord tributary weight.
Yet in wood frame reality there is the eave side (non roof bearing side) of the building. I wonder on this side...
In calculate shearwall I had a long SW that resulted in tiedown value as negative.
How should I understand this in layman terms ?
After reduce the length of the SW, I had it a positive number. Wonder if at certain lengths, SW starts to yield negative tiedown value.
Hi forum.
I am new, and I am an architect working mostly residential.
I currently having a house with 200A main panel (with metter). We try to add another sub panel 125A for the house new addition (1000sf).
My knowledge of electrical work limits to fill out the panel schedule with amperage and...
Hi, I m trying to understand Bldg Seismic Effective Weight, BSEW, on a small 1 car garage 10x20x9'ht.
I watched several YouTube videos and still unsure.
A few questions:
1. In ASD calculation, that BSEW is the weight of the roof (15psf x 200sf) plus all perimeter walla weight (20+10)x2 x9ft ht...
Hi Structure Engineers,
I have question on the residential under floor pier that supports Girder and floor joist above...that I saw often in CA.
What kind of Girder bracing here (sure it s Simpson Tie), should it be described, in tech term, "pin ?.
Should the piers only be used as midspan...
