    Impact Socket Material

    I'm making a large impact socket and was planning on using 4340 for it, but wondering if either D2 or H13 tool steel would be any better for this application? I know they are strong but not sure which would take the impact better.

    Large impact socket heat treating

    Anyone familiar with impact socket design? I'm making a 7" ID 8" deep impact socket for a lock nut and not sure about the heat treatment/hardening/tempering. Does a hardness of HRC43-45 sound right? It'll be made out of 4140 or possibly 4340.
