    Hip Roof

Hello Guys; I am currently working on a patio cover, please see the attached sketch. The architect wants me to remove two interior beams where the king posts are landing. I have seen several hip roofs without interior supports, but I just don't get how they are working. It seems that the...

Two Way Slabs With Drop Panels.

I am using the Direct Design Method to determine the design moments for a Flat Slab with End Span Simply Supported on wall. My main concern is the detailing of the reinforcement. I am following ACI, Fig. 13.3.8 – and it appears that some areas of my slab will be unreinforced on the top, see...

Replacing Concrete Corbel with a Steel Plate.

Hello I designed a corbel for a bridge crane, but now the architect came back and said that he needed additional clearance (from the floor to the bottom of the corbel). They do not want to raise the roof, nor lower the slab. Being that the case, I need to find another way to support my bridge...

Shearwall Holdown on a Discontinous Lateral System.

Hello Guys; I am designing a two story Single Family Dwelling. The second floor has a 3'-0" projection out of the first floor. I have designed my shearwall, but I need to know how to strap it, I usually use an MST but in this case, I do not have where to strap it to. Attached is a sketch, any...

Reality check for a cantilever walkway.

I did a quick calc for a 6" cantilever concrete walkway, I would like to know if i am missing something. My minimum reinforcement looks iffy. Thanks Attached is the file,

    Underground Building.

Hello all; I am designing an underground building which has a length of 200 feet and width of 60 feet. The height of the walls is 29 feet and it will have a dirt cover of 3 feet (The slab will see 3 feet of dirt). EFP pressure from the geo-report is 50 pcf/ft. Seismic is 15 H (inverted...

    Is this weld possible?

Hey Guys; I have 61" circular plate that I will be adding stiffeners which are 5/8" thick x 12" and they vary in depth. See attached sketch. I am the structural checking the calcs, which are fine, but is this constructable? The spacing between the stiffeners are less than 4", and you would...

    Concrete Strenght from 1913

Hey Guys; I am working on a Pipe Support Design, I will be using Cable Pipe Hangers / Nylon Strap. The problem is that this is a 78" diameter concrete pipe that was built in 1913. I was able to find the plans, but no Concrete Strenght was specified. Any Ideas on the f'c? Thanks Regards

    Cd Factor for Formwork Design.

Hello: I would like to know which factors have you guys used in the past for Load Duration. The 2004 -APA Concrete Forming Document states that I can use 1.625, but the ACI 347 says to use a 1.25. I think that 1.625 is just high. What do you guys think? Thanks

    Seismic Calcs on Pipe Bridge.

Hello; I am currently working on a pipe bridge that will support a 20" water line. Total weight of combined system is 36kips. I am working on the seimic part. I would like to know if I can use the ASCE-07 (chapter 15) and consider it as a Nonbuilding Structure. From Table 15.4-2 Seimic...

Vertical Distribution of Seismic Forces ASCE 7-05

Hello; I have been trying to find out about the "k" factor in the Cvx formula (12.8-12). The ASCE 7-05 states that it is an exponent related to the structure period. But I still do not know where it comes from, is it a factor that relates to the system's ductility? Please let me know if you...

Slab on Grade for a Water Tank

Hey Guys; I am designing a slab on grade. It is a 22'x 200' concrete slab. I will have several tanks along the concrete pad. Each tank weights approximately 141 kips. This load will be distributed by 4 columns, which will be attached to the tank. Therefore; I will have a maximum concentrated...
