    Engineer or what?

Many good and bad points were made here. It appears to me that most of the bad points were the result of the posters misunderstanding the original post. Let that be a lesson to us all. Before you jump to the conclusion that everyone you meet is an idiot, stop and take the time to be certain...

    Cleaning carbon deposits, recommended cleaners

Now wait just a second here. I was given to believe that the primary concern when you burn chlorinated combounds was the production of phosgene gas. I've never heard anything that said hydrochloric acid was a byproduct as well. Although admittedly phosgene poses a much greater health risk...

use of zinc anodes in an autimotive application

I guess that it was a poor choice of words on my part to say that electronic cathodic protection would be your best bet, because what I really meant to sya was that galvanizing or zink paint is one thing that I know will help, but that electronic cathodic protection is something that would be...

use of zinc anodes in an autimotive application

Zinks are used on marine vessels in locations that are always conductive. Inside heat exchangers(raw water side), on outdrives, and on hull plating and on propeller shafts. Automobiles are not costantly submersed like these applications, and therefore I doubt that zinks would offer much...

    Internal splines

I'm sure that this is an easy question for most, but I am wondering how an internal spline is cut. For that matter, how is an external spline cut.

    statement/interview after an accident

Responsibility transfer unjustly to another? In the situation that you described I was given the impression that you played a central role and your involvement in the situation would inevitably be known by the investigators. On the other hand if someone else was found to be responsible for...

Mechanical seal leaking on BJ Deepwell pumps

Longeron, These seals do utilize only one spring. jjpelin, would it be possible for you to send me a copy of the manual for one of these pumps, because I am having a hard time finding one?

repair of crack in steel pipe that conttains oil.

Carberize, I appreciate your help, hoowever I ddon't really feel that gearbox housings have the same characteristics as steel pipe. I would guess that your gearbox housings are either cast aluminum, cast iron, or cast steel. The emphasis of course being on the "cast." Although I may...

    statement/interview after an accident

Back to the statements that I made regarding biasing, I am a firm believer that everyone is biased. Furthermore I believe that since most if not all of the information we use to form our thoughts has been received through our senses, that everything we see, hear, smell, taste or feel has been...

Mechanical seal leaking on BJ Deepwell pumps

It was suggested that vent lines be installed between the seal flange and the pump well, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this when the product being pumped solidifies at ambient temperatures. I'm concerned that any vent line I might install would probably work for the first...

repair of crack in steel pipe that conttains oil.

I was once told by someone that I now feel lacks much credibility that when you are welding on a pipe that has any oil in it, that when yoou attempt to weld up the crack that any oil in the pipe will be drawn too and will contaminate the weld. this is wrong, isn't it? Won't the oil actually be...

Mechanical seal leaking on BJ Deepwell pumps

I always set the seal clearance to 0.1875" after the impelller lift has been set. If I'm not mistaken the impeller clearance is grater than the seal clearance, so to lock the seal to the shaft prior to setting the impeller clearance would result in a seal clearance that was excessive.

Mechanical seal leaking on BJ Deepwell pumps

Actually my aplication is driven by a detroit 12V-71 through an angle drive. I usually check the shaft deflection by pushing and pulling as you suggested, except I do it uncoupled, moving only the pump shaft. However the readings I usually get are anywhere from .060" to .070". The...

    statement/interview after an accident

Chances are if you're responsible then sooner or later whomever is investigating will learn of your involvement, and then the questioning will begin "why didn't you come foreward on your own," and anything you have to say in your defense will be viewed in a much harsher light than if...

Mechanical seal leaking on BJ Deepwell pumps

jjpelin, I thank you very much for your insight. I have a couple of additional questions for you, if you don't mind. First the coupling is a threaded coupling that threads onto both shafts (6"long with internal threads 2 1/8" - 6tpi LH). How could this coupling be bad? I am...

Mechanical seal leaking on BJ Deepwell pumps

Nothing new here except changes to sealing components. I do not know what you mean by "flush plan." suction presssure varies as they are cargo pumps for a petroleum barge. The pumps have three stages.

    Do U agree

Although not entirely related to the discussion currently underway, I have something that I wish to add. Rather than an opinion about the proverb already presented though, I have another one for you. The Japanese have a saying which loosely translated says: Engineers make the money and...

Mechanical seal leaking on BJ Deepwell pumps

BW 2625. We have made various modifications such as reducing the contact area of the stationary seal face and installing stiffer springs trying to eliminate problem with little success.

Mechanical seal leaking on BJ Deepwell pumps

I have been having problems with the mechanical seals on B.J. deepwell pumps leaking, often within only a few hours following their installation. The fluid being pumped is black oil, (ie. VGO, cutter stock, bunker fuels, waxes etc.) The seals we are using currently using are BW seals having...
