Reactive moments in a cantilever beam modeled with 3-D elements

I have a doubt in the formulation of 3-D HEXA elements. I know for a fact that HEXA elements cannot take applied moments as it has only 3 translational dofs. In the case of a completely constrained cantilever beam with a point load at one end, there will be a reactive moment where it is...

Using 2d quad elements for box beam section

I have a question on using 2d elements for building a hollow box beam section. If we take the mid-surface of the section and build the thickness on both sides, there will be penetration of the material (thickness) at the corners of the section. Can anyone please tell me the procedure to model a...

    stresses in plates

Hi, This question is bugging me a lot and I have not found a convincing answer.Consider a plate in the x-y plane .If I apply a normal stress in the x-direction, will there be a stress in the y-direction due to poisson's effect? I am sure in a beam problem there will be a transverse strain...

Print/viewing element stiffness matrix in nastran

I have a model of a pressure vessel for which I need to see the element stiffness matrix for a few elements. Is there any way of seeing the stiffness matrix only for selected elements in .f06 format or in .pch format in nastran. Please help Thanks in advance Bharat

Type of analysis for a suddenly applied load on a beam

This is not homework, I am running an analysis of a suddenly applied load on a beam, so that I can carry out the same analysis for a wing later.I will try to upload the input file later. Thank you

Type of analysis for a suddenly applied load on a beam

Hi, I want to model a beam with a concentrated load of 60 N acting on the tip. I want the load to increase from 0 to 60 N in 0.001 seconds and again go back from 60 to 0 in another 0.01 seconds and check for the maximum stresses and deflections at that time. what kind of analysis should I carry...

To view ply failure index in abaqus

Hi I have modelled a ball and a plate impact analysis using abaqus explicit. I want to see the failure index due to the impact. I have used the fail stress option and also the field variable CFAILURE to check for the failure index using various theories but I am not sure where and how to...

Stress analysis of laminated composite cantilever beam

Hi, I have a doubt regarding the stress analysis of laminated composite cantilever beam. How do I carry out the stress calculations of a cantilever beam with a point load at the end of 10N?say for example I have a beam of length 1000 mm, width of 20 mm of 6 plies of 1 mm each so thickness will...

Difference in values of torsional frequency in nastran and calculations

Hi, I want to find out the torsional frequency of a component with 2 shafts, each shaft fixed to a frame on either side. The shafts are completely constrained at one of its ends and the other end is attached to the frame.Torsional stiffness of each shaft is 5000 N-mm. The frame is inturn attached...

Torsional Vibration of a plate and a frame attached to a bar element

I have modelled a circular plate attached to a frame using rigid elements. I have attached 2 cbar elements on either side of the frame and i have rigidly constrained the bar elements. I ran the file and got a natural frequency of 3Hz. I am not sure if the answer is correct. How to calculate the...

Stiffness of a torsional bar attached on either side of a plate

I have a square plate with 1 torsion bar on each side. The torsion bar is completely constrained to a wall. I have to find out the natural frequency along the axis of the bar. I just want to know that if there are two torsion bars as mentioned, are they considered to be in series or parallel...

Extremely high values of g-force due to impact in abaqus explicit

Thanks for the answer :)its a model plane totaling about 3.8 kgs including all the payloads..but if the g-force is so high at impact, will the stresses also be very high? because I am getting stress values about 150 Mpa.. Thank you Bharat

Extremely high values of g-force due to impact in abaqus explicit

Hi, I have modeled a crash analysis of an Unmanned air vehicle on a rigid ground in abaqus explicit. I took the vertical velocity of the UAV as 700 mm/s (0.7 m/s) and the horizontal velocity 12000 mm/s. I want to find the g-force at the point of impact as soon as the impact takes place. The...

Torsional Vibrations of a shaft and a rotor

Thanks a lot :) Thanks a lot :) I did refine, and the answer is accurate :) Thanks a lot for your time :) just one last doubt :) what is the reason why we should use rbe 2 element to connect the cbar and the rotor?:)

Torsional Vibrations of a shaft and a rotor

Thanks a lot :) but the 1st torsion mode of vibration is still 0.0005hz. I think as you said the reason is the lack of rotational stiffness of cquad element about its normal. Is there any other way I can model the same? Is there any element which can be used to model rotational stiffness??Thanks...

Torsional Vibrations of a shaft and a rotor

I tried with a concentrated mass and the answer was exact :) this was easy because I knew the Mass moment of inertia of the rotor was known. Next I have to model a Micro air vehicle mounted on the rotor which in turn is attached to the shaft. I have no idea how to carry out this model and I do...
