I found out what was wrong. When draftsight can't fit the drawing to the size you specify, it will scale the drawing to fit the size. There was a small line about 1/8" long, way above the drawing. I don't know how it got there, but draftsight considered it part of the drawing so that the line...

Most of those videos don't run. The getting-started-guide may have the answer but a quick search has only produced the polyline command which seems to allow an angle only if you are drawing an arc.
