In writing a specification regarding roller chain, I intend to include a statement that chain shall conform to ANSI/ASME B291. Is ANSI/ASME B29.1M simply a metric conversion of B29.1, and therefore the same thing?

I am a little rusty, but I used to read B-C as "common datum B-C". What is common with both B & C? Nothing! If A is not sufficient I lean toward the feature of size suggested by Belanger.
If I have a drawing where the envelope requirement is made the default by a general note, reference to ISO 2768…-E, or other means, and I want to override the envelope requirement and have the independency principle apply to one feature of size on the drawing, how would I do that? The “I”...
To all those suggesting notes:
When we design a part, we do not know where (in what country) the product will be built or whether a particular part will be built in one of facilities or outsourced to anywhere in the world. Therefore, notes are absolutely the last resort. Notes on a drawing...
pmarc, I had forgotten about that. However, I think I would rather use a current ASME symbol than an obsolete ASME note on a drawing that is supposed to be to ISO standards.
Under the ISO system, how would you do it? I guess you could remove whatever note or spec invoked the Envelope...
dgallup & Belanger, if you have a note that basically changes the default to the Envelope Requirement, do you ever want to invoke the Independency Principle? If so, how would you do it, since the I in a circle symbol is not recognized by ISO.
Is anyone (successfully) using slots & tabs to locate parts in a welded assembly? We are in the agricultural equipment industry, so we use a lot of hot rolled steel. The thickness tolerance of the material has a direct effect on the thickness of the tab, which affects the locating ability...
I agree, pmarc, and I am that resource, brought out of retirement for this specific purpose. I first had to write a company GTOL standard based upon (a snapshot of) ISO. Don't know how or if we will try to keep up with changes. Our GTOL standard complies with ISO (at least that was the...
It is not that we are not happy with ASME/ANSI, CheckerHater. We have become a multinational company through acquisitions, and, as is a sign of the times, most of our locations are not in the US. Hence, we in the US are making a change.
As with the metric system and language, most of the...
Are there other companies out there that have switched from Y14.5 to the ISO GTOl stds? If so, how did you manage to get people to switch their thinking from Envelope Requirement to Independency Principle?
Also, I have been using the term "basic" for 40 years and am having a hard time using...
