Limey Question: Do your codes allow for a reasonable live load reduction? It's a gamble saying that the probability that both floors will be fully loaded at any one time is low but if it appears in the relevant codes, it's at least justifiable.
I'm another MathCAD convert. I like the easy integration between math and text which can make it an easier task on the reviewer by explaining what you're analysing, why and the method you're using. It's easy to paste screenshots from AutoCAD too if it starts getting a bit "wordy". Having the...
As sandCounter mentioned above, small companies can offer a great opportunity to learn; whatever the industry. They'll give you valuable site experience, contact with the contractors/operatives who'll go on to build your future designs and will take the time to explain why things are done a...
If you do the calcs to prove that local web buckling can be resisted purely by the chosen section alone (without compromising economy by over-sizing the section), then stiffeners can be omitted. I don't see what the problem is.
They look very much like the proprietary trusses used in scaffolding (as Ingenuity posted). Have you been able to spot a manufactures stamp? Most of these systems are an alloy so be careful if your assuming steel.
Picture for comparison:
As pointed out earlier, there are insufficient/missing...
It looks like the report has just used bar for the pressure unit, which would give you 50 kPa at 1.5 m indicating poor soil, probable soft clay or silt? Depending on what you need to do, you could be looking at made ground or larger footings etc. Give the client's GeoTech a call to run through...
For a simple deviation from the intended curve at mid-span I use L/1000 or 6 mm, whichever is greater. Or do you mean is there a maximum radius a beam can be curved to, depending on section size?
This article from New Steel Construction gives a brief overview of how BS 449 dealt with things. Whether or not it can answer all your queries is another thing...

Steel Designer's manual or the ever trusty Machinery's Handbook. Steel Designer's is in metric and deals with Euro Codes, Machinery's is predominantly in American but it's not hard to convert.
I fit's powered but does not exceed 10 ft/min in the lift and trolley speeds of 50 ft/min, it can be classed as similar to a hand operated machine which throws you back to the 10%. Although that's the load factor for the static wheel loads, it does mention that this takes care of the dynamic...
No love for Robot?
@ OP: These are quite expensive packages, are you looking to set up your own practise? Revit can be useful if you are part of a large design team eg. Architect, M+E, Structures etc. but for the smaller projects, not so much. If you are looking to be employed, the choices...
Yesterday was National Women in Engineering Day here in the UK. I didn't hear much about any of the events or which companies/schools participated. Things are happening to try to get women interested but they don't seem to be pushing very hard to get noticed. They may just have to accept that...
For small scale works (not a lot of drawings or anticipated revisions needed) We tend to bill based on an hourly rate. When the projects start getting into the 1M plus range, then we go for a percentage of the construction costs. This cuts the need for trying to guess how many revisions the...
When I worked for one of the larger consultancies, any overtime hours had to be approved by your department director. The only time they'd approve OT is if they'd asked you to do it. the time sheets would then go to the HR dept. who would then mark your OT as "unnecessary hours", meaning they...
Not quite. The designer and the checker both have to sign and date the drawings and calcs. The checking engineer is usually of chartered status and takes overall responsibility for the design team. The technical director also has a look over and adds his/her signature to the stack, which gets...
I think it would take something catastrophic to happen (in the UK at least) before the government or local authorities would start regularising engineering practise. Like some sort of country wide gross incompetency issue.
