Steel joist supporting a fall arrest system

dh: I appreciate your response. With more thought, I too questioned the 5000lbs, and after speaking with a colleague we recognized that additional info and analysis was required to properly evaluate. I replied to the client indicating this and expressed more time is required for a proper...

Steel joist supporting a fall arrest system

Just finished the calc. The analysis was easy, especially considering there is no lateral support to resist the 300lb mechanic swinging around after he falls. I decided to use common sense and basic engineering to back up my opinion.

Steel joist supporting a fall arrest system

I have a client who want to use an existing 28LH07 steel joist as the tie off location for his fall arrest system. Although I personally would design a separate tie off, the client wants the joist analyzed for the 5000lb concentrated load. I realize there are methods to analyze a new...

Advice for a Young Structural Engineer

I agree with kylesito....Due to a restructuring and dramatic drop in building workload, I recently made a move to bridges (either layoff or transfer). I will say working for DOTs is tough and very "prescriptive". My experience over the last two years has been pull out an example bridge project...

Are you the engineer and the drafter?

I did not expect such a big response to my question! Good to hear the different experiences and points of views. Thanks!

Point load on stone foundation wall

I agree with ztengguy. I had a similar project and columned down to a solid foundation to eliminate the stone variable. Once the stone was reset, you would have never known a column was placed.

Are you the engineer and the drafter?

For those of you who work as a one man team or for very small firms (in particular structural guys/gals), do you perform CAD drafting for your work or do you sub that out? Or maybe you don't use CAD at all? Just curious as to your approach. I have previously worked for a large firm and had...

    Pile Reinforcement Development Shortage

I would recommend a mechanical splice on the bars. I would assume the cost of the mechanical splice would be cheaper than the labor to chip the concrete. Just my opinion, but both are acceptable options.

    Engineers and home inspections.....good idea?

Maybe this is the wrong thread, but here goes... I am a structural engineer working as a consultant for local architects and contractors. Although I did not begin with a specific niche, recently my primary focus and client base has been structural inspections and assessments. I receive many...

    Tangent Caisson Design Help

We recently were awarded a project with tangent caissons being used as support for a bridge abutment and also as permanent shoring to resist lateral soil and surcharge loads. I am a rookie in deep foundation design and I am looking for design guidelines or examples for this type of deep...
