Thank you for the replies!
metengr: A403 does allow for "other rapid cool" so gas would count to solve problem (A), but ideally I would like to get a liquid quench if possible to certify to both.
EdStainless: I have no doubt on the metallurgical integrity of a gas quench for rapid uniform...
Normally my company machines small NPS (1/8" & 1/4") ASME B16.11 stainless (304,316) hex head plugs directly from small diameter bar, at great tooling and machine expense.
I am exploring the idea of cold forming/heading OR hot-forged hex head plugs with rolled threads. A couple hurdles arise in...
Hi everyone,
Does anyone know of any good research that has been done to support rolled bar over forged bar, or that they are at least both similar and acceptable practices for quality product?
Hi everyone,
Thanks for your input, it means a lot...
dbooker, metengr - the "rolled" bar that we planned on using has a 7:1 reduction ratio, 5.5" OD round bar.
We spoke to the mill who provided the bar. They said that they only make forged bar down to about a 6.5" OD. They said that as you...
Hello,
A customer is asking for "forged bar" as the starting material for a certain finished part. We have in stock what the mill refers to as "rolled bar", which the customer will not accept. I can't seem to find a definitive difference between "forged" and "rolled" bar. Depending on where you...
From a recent project of investigating a semi-metallic brake pad from an ATV, I found the main material to be calcium silicate with mostly brass and steel fibers scattered throughout. The CaSi has decent wear resistance as a ceramic and the the metal fibers help prevent heat fade, as tbuelna...
Thanks metengr for the quick response.
EdStainless:
The parts were supposed to be done to A182-F304/L, which requires solution annealing and a liquid quench.
The parts vary from 2" - 5" OD.
I just want to re-anneal the finished parts and liquid quenched them without distorting their dimensions...
Hi everyone,
Is it possible to anneal piping products that have already been final machined? Specifically it is F304/L.
The bar we made the parts from were orginally Normalized and Air Cooled. I need them to be Water Quenched.
Can this be done without ruining the dimensions of the parts or...
Hi everyone,
I have another similar problem with the notorious F53 Duplex SS. I had 3" OD forgings of different shapes. They were processed as follows:
Close Die Hammer Forged @ ~2235-2250 F, then water quenched.
Annealed @ ~2015 F for 2 hours, then water quenched.
Two of the shapes passed...
Hi everyone,
I have a problem regarding F53 duplex SS. We were annealing 2-1/2" OD forgings in-house at the recommended ~2000 deg F. The forgings were taken out even before any quenching with long cracks along the surface or even split in half. I know that the intermetallic sigma phase can cause...
