    Zinc-Coated Hardware Question (outdoor application)

Thanks for your input, everyone. I really appreciate it. I think we're going to go with all galvanized hardware (no lock washers). We're pretty sure that with the torque applied in our assembly process it should hold up in the field.

    Zinc-Coated Hardware Question (outdoor application)

Greg, Thanks for the comment. I hadn't heard of Nord Lock washers before. I looked them up, and unfortunately I think they will be cost prohibitive for our application.

    Zinc-Coated Hardware Question (outdoor application)

racookpe1978, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, SS is going to be cost prohibitive in this application. We have a ton of connections on this thing, and we're up against some very tough competition. Using SS hardware would kill our margin on this thing (which is already small). Also...

    Zinc-Coated Hardware Question (outdoor application)

Hey everyone, I have a conundrum regarding hardware for a wheel used in pivot (agricultural) irrigation systems. These wheels have several polymer segments that bolt to an inner galvnized steel wheel. The hardware that we had traditionally used was zinc-plated, but as you can probably guess...

    Shipping Non-Coated Steel Parts Overseas?

Hi everyone, I have a question regarding shipping steel parts overseas and corrosion. My company currently purchases a large wheel, made from AISI 1018 steel, from a Chinese supplier. This wheel is fabricated from a steel hoop and a stamped steel center hub, which are then welded. The...

Question about Signing a Patent Application

Thank you all for the responses - I do appreciate it. There's been a lot of good discussion here about what is and isn't patentable. But if I could steer the conversation a bit, I'd like to ask some of you specifically if you would be comfortable signing a patent application for either of...

Question about Signing a Patent Application

Hi everyone, I need some advice on signing a potential patent application in a rather complex situation (apologies if this thread is in the wrong section - I couldn't find a more applicable one). I'll describe the situation: My company makes wheels for pivot irrigation systems. Part of this...

Powder Coat Affecting Lug Nut Seating?

Thank you again for all the responses. I'll try to remember to post an update in the future when we get this issue sorted out.

Powder Coat Affecting Lug Nut Seating?

Thanks for the tip on Stage 8. I'll check them out. I have confirmed that the chamfer used on the irrigation system lug nuts (at least all the ones I've seen so far) is 45°. The center hub fits through the center pilot hole with a slip fit, so there is some centering action there, at least...

Powder Coat Affecting Lug Nut Seating?

The steel wheels don't have any belleville washer profile. It's just a T-wheel with chamfered holes. See attached/linked picture.http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=eca545d0-2bf2-4855-81fa-71456a252369&file=Pivot_wheel.jpg

Powder Coat Affecting Lug Nut Seating?

Thank you all for the responses. I really do appreciate it. I'll try to use what you've said as ammunition to convince my boss that we need to remove the powder coat on the bevels. Just for clarification: these pivot wheels are going on someone else's pivot irrigation system, usually...

Powder Coat Affecting Lug Nut Seating?

Hi everyone, I have a problem that I inherited from a previous designer that I need help with. My company currently builds wheel assemblies for pivot irrigation systems (among other things), and our current design utilizes a steel T-wheel that is powder coated. The bolt holes in the wheel...
