Using a Capacitive Proximity Sensor as an Analog Distance Sensor?

How would one use a sensor like the cheap Capacitive proximity sensor and breadboard it so that the output was an analog voltage based on distance? Basically what I would want to do is put a voltage to the sensor and have the output be an analog signal of voltage that is proportional to distance...

Using a Capacitive Proximity Sensor as an Analog Distance Sensor?

I am working on an Arduino PID control project and I want to use a capacitive sensor for detecting the distance between a target and a steel plate. I need the output signal from the sensor to be analog so that I can use it to measure the distance. For some reason I am having difficulty finding a...

Hot Mold Investment Casting - Sprue Design

Hi All, I am working on the design of a machine that will automate the investment casting process for small aluminum parts (ZA-8 alloy). From all the investment casting that I've done, I've always used a fairly large and tall sprue because I was pouring molten aluminum into a room temperature...

Analog Inductive Sensor for Constant Height Offset?

I'm a mechanical engineer by trade and don't have a lot of experience with inductive sensors. What I want to do is a use an analog output inductive sensor (something like the Fargo S6108) mounted to a vertical slide controlled with a stepper motor so that the analog sensor is used to make...

Maximum Angle for Rod Moving Up Ramp

This should be a pretty simple problem I just can't remember from my college physics days how to solve this. Basically a steel rod with a ball end is inserted into a vertical bore that is fixed. This vertical bore is rigidly mounted and moves in the positive X direction so that the ball end on...

    Galvanic Corrosion in Tap Water?

Hi Guys, I have an aluminum tray with a drop-in steel structure that sits at room temperature. The tray will be filled with just plain tap water and the steel and aluminum are untreated for corrosion. Will there be a galvanic cell formed between the aluminum and the steel if there is no...

How to calculate a dynamic load due to changing acceleration at the end of a cantilever?

Is the max load really this low? Intuition would lead me to believe that the load would be much higher.

How to calculate a dynamic load due to changing acceleration at the end of a cantilever?

I am working on an application that involves a cantilevered tube. At one end the tube is fixed to a roller assembly that can move the entire cantilevered tube along another tube that is 90 degrees to the cantilevered tube. Think of a T where the middle I is the cantilever tube and it can move...

Single deep groove ball bearing, radial load offset from bearing centerline

Mike, Your comment as to whether my competitor might have some sort of radial bearing has got me thinking... A clutch basket is secured to the sprocket and that clutch basket is essentially splined to friction plates. Those friction plates that are clamped concentrically to a flywheel that is...

Single deep groove ball bearing, radial load offset from bearing centerline

How long does the bearing last? - Hard to say, I have about 30 hours of testing completed on one bearing with no issues so far. Does the clutch get hot enough to burn off the bearing grease, to melt the seals? -No. Bearing maybe gets to 180 degrees at most How many cycles in an hour? In the...

Single deep groove ball bearing, radial load offset from bearing centerline

Both of those statements are correct. But since this clutch is a friction clutch, there will be times where the clutch is 'slipping' and the bearing is slowing down until it is spinning 1-to-1 with the shaft.

Single deep groove ball bearing, radial load offset from bearing centerline

Mike, thanks for the feedback. I've attached a picture showing a section view of the sprocket and bearing. The sprocket connects to a clutch that is driven by the keyed shaft that the bearing rides on. The clutch is not shown for proprietary reasons. i know for sure that my competitors product...

Single deep groove ball bearing, radial load offset from bearing centerline

Its actually a driving sprocket connected to a gas engine that produces about 15 foot pounds of torque. Based on this value and the diameter and offset of the speocket i was able to provide the radial force and moment.

Single deep groove ball bearing, radial load offset from bearing centerline

I have an application where a roller chain sprocket hub is supported by a single deep groove ball bearing that is supported by a 20mm shaft. In order to get the sprocket tooth count to a low enough number to support the application, the sprocket is situated adjacent to the ball bearing (to...

Using equally sized single acting hydraulic cylinders to transfer motion (i.e. master and slave)

The positioning capability is not important for this process. The only thing that is it important is that the tool slide moves 1-to-1 with the crank pin. In reality that isn't even important because i can easily increase or decrease the runout of the crank in order to induce the correct...

Using equally sized single acting hydraulic cylinders to transfer motion (i.e. master and slave)

Somewhere in the connection between the hydraulic cylinders i am going to install a tee. Connected to the tee will be a hand pump. I'll use the handpump to fill the hose and both hydraulic cylinders. I'll drill and tap the lower plate of each cylinder for a bleed screw and make sure that each...

Using equally sized single acting hydraulic cylinders to transfer motion (i.e. master and slave)

My thought is that if the return spring on the slide is strong enough, it will help to preload any air bubbles in the master and slave cylinders and in the hydraulic ram. I'm currently looking at approximately 800 pound return spring. With 2" hydraulic cylinders, this will create 250psi of...

Using equally sized single acting hydraulic cylinders to transfer motion (i.e. master and slave)

I'm working on tool that incorporates a machining slide that is positioned by a hydraulic cylinder. This hydraulic cylinder will be actuated by an identical hydraulic cylinder driven by a crankshaft ~20 feet away. If the master cylinder being run by the crankshaft compresses 1" per revolution...

Minimum raceway hardness for lightly loaded needle roller bearing

Hi all, this is my first post here. I am looking for some advice. I have an application that requires the use of a 1" needle roller bearing, .75" wide. This bearing is being used as a pilot bearing similar in function to the pilot bearings used to support the transmission input shaft in...
