What would you consider the unbraced length of this double angle to be?

Thanks for all the responses. Looks like I have some good thoughts and some good material to look through. More thoughts or references are always welcome, the more material the better... sometimes. :)

What would you consider the unbraced length of this double angle to be?

If I have a typical braced frame where the braces are double angles, if I use a spacer plate with a through bolt at mid-span to connect the double angles, can I consider them braced at mid-span for compressive purposes? I would assume that I could because one is in tension and the other...

HSS tube column (LED sign) with a 3" diameter hole for electrical - torsional issues

Doh. I definitely thought I did. Thanks for pointing that out. Columns are HSS 6x6x1/4. And the reinforcing is what I'm probably going to be doing, but my curiosity gets the better of me sometimes.

HSS tube column (LED sign) with a 3" diameter hole for electrical - torsional issues

I am designing an LED sign on HSS tube columns (similar to what you see in front of schools). ASCE 7 says you need an offset for wind forces equal to .2 times the sign width and the extra torsion created gives me problems because the column needs a 3" diameter hole for electrical purposes. I...

    Tension in a cable

I've used this for cable analysis: http://www.slideruleera.net/USSWireRopeEngrHandBook.zip Just realized DesertFox already referred to it. I used it along with some other quick hand calcs that I found people suggested (from googling and looking for something reliable). They all matched up...

    Hilti Allowable loads into CMU

I see several options but going back through the calcs without the factors is the most precise. Other options I have used: 1) Contact Hilti 2) Use your factored loads directly against the allowable loads. Yes, you essentially get penalized, but it's only safer than before. You just increase...

Specifications for burying a 4" diameter nitrogen filled pipeline

Some mechanical engineers and I are working on a job where we need to bury a 4" diameter nitrogen filled pipeline. We cannot find anything regarding specifications for burying it (particular minimum/maximum depth, does it need to be wrapped, use a different particular material). I don't want to...
