Deflection limits of a TV sign

Hi All, Any thoughts on deflection limits for a large TV sign mounted in a stadium. See attached crude image. I was thinking about H/100 to H/150. Does anybody have an SLS reference for such a structure? Cheers...

    Tiered cantilevered block retaining walls

Hi All, I have two questions. 1) tiered retaining walls. Discussion in the office today yielded, the easiest way to analyse the tiered walls is to design the lower wall assuming it was retaining the full height. See sketch attached. This example has a lower wall height of 1.8m and a upper...

Cantilevered timber poles supporting timber Deck

Thank you for the advice. H/250-300 or 10mm seems reasonable I guess. MIStruct_IRE - The Deck cannot be braced underneath, however I have strapped it back to the floor of the house which should really take any vibration out of the floor / posts. Countervail / KootK - thank you for your comments.

Cantilevered timber poles supporting timber Deck

Hi All, Really simple query, what deflection limit would you use when designing cantilevered timber poles supporting a timber deck. As the decks as sitting on posts / poles (2.4-3m high), they may be some apparent sensory vibration. Traditionally, the 'codes' [Aus/NZ] here do not give any...

Elastic Resistance to Lateral Buckling (Appendix H - 3404)

Hi, I am trying to design a warren truss using the elastic buckling method as described in Appendix H of NZS3404. I have heard this method produces more efficient results but I am unsure of how to implement this. Does anyone have an example of how this applies to a truss member? To add some...

AS/NZS 1170.2: Local Pressure Factor for SLS

Hi All, A few engineers in my practice have different views of using KL factors when designing roof purlins. No doubt, the code ask for kl factors to be checked when assessing the ULS capacity of the purlins. What about for SLS? We have had situations where we have had a kl of 1.5, and as...

    Plotting Response Spectrum

Hi Folks, I am quite new to earthquake engineering and was hoping someone could help me out. I am looking at the El Centro 1940 quake and trying to plot the earthquakes response spectrum. I am using excel. At this stage, I have plotted Acceleration v Time, Velocity v Time and Displacement v...

RE: Modelling Earthquakes in Microstran V9

Hi Guys, This is quite a basis question basis, but I am trying to model an earthquake using the data from Geonet (NZ). If there is a better source of information I would appreciate it. Can anyone please give me a run through on what exactly I have to do? I work in a small firm and nobody has...

    Job Costing

Hi All, I have a question in relation to costing / quoting and estimations for structural jobs. Currently in NZ, the work is pretty good and constantly busy. I have spoken to other engineers and they are suggesting a percentage fee based on the gross cost of the structure? Is this common...
