Some great comments and suggestions - much appreciated. We think that we may have some air leaked into the system, which can also be a source of water hammer. We are checking at the minesite and I'll keep you posted. Thanks everyone.
This water hammer problem is at an old underground mine with many working levels and complex network of water supply pipes. A computer simulation will be meaningless or far too complex to be worth the bother. Is the noise level of the water hammer in the pipes in any way related to the...
Hello Hturkak - are you saying that the 0.070 includes a Factor of Safety of 5, which can be ignored for arriving at the actual pressure wave size in psi? The 0.0135 is the number I keep arriving at - 62.4/(32.2 x 144) = 0.0135.
The water hammer formula is:-
delta pressure (lb/inch sq.) = 0.070 x change in velocity (feet/sec.) x pipe length (feet) x 1/time (sec.).
The equation P = 0.07 (VL / t) shows the relationship of these three variables and their effect. “P” is the additional pressure generated by the shock...
Does anyone know how the 0.070 factor in the Water Hammer pressure formula is derived? I get a lower number when introducing the water density and 'g' into the formula to get the units to cancel out to lb/inch squared. Please see attachment.
Hello All,
Firstly, let me assure MM and everyone, that I had nothing to do with any deleted postings. I am appreciating all of the comments and replying as best that I can. This project is moving forward, albeit slowly as there is much at stake and its complicated.
The 1,000 meter...
Thank you all for some very good comments and observations. Let me add more information as a result of the above.
Firstly, this is a real mine that has reached its production capacity from conventional skip hoisting. Now, there is a requirement for a significant increase in mine production. A...
Hello LittleInch - thanks for your comments. My responses are below.
It has to be one 1,000 meter lift as the pipes will be in boreholes with no intermediate access.
The PD pumps will be of the reciprocating diaphragm design.
The slurry velocity will be above the particle settling velocity...
We are planning to pump solids in a slurry form from a deep underground mine. The slurry particles will have a top size of 4.5 mm and a bottom size of -300 mesh. A laboratory test will be restricted to using a 2 inch diameter vertical pipe and centrifugal pump with a maximum lift of 50 feet...
I'm in the process of applying for a patent with the US Patent Office for a hydraulic transportation system. There is a UK patent issued in 1922 that refers to Mother Lye as the transport medium. This is causing the USPO Examiner some concern. Does anyone know the chemical composition of...
Hello All,
I have a heat transfer problem of water flowing into and out of a large tank. This is an application on a mining project in northern Canada and how the issue impacts on the building HVAC design. We have a pipeline transporting 2,300 USgpm of mining waste in water from some...
I'd like to thank you all for your valued input and comments.
After much deliberation and calculations (and listening to what has been said by you all in this Forum), the pipe will be insulated with 2" of polyurethane on a 14" diameter DR11 HDPE pipe, with no heat tracing. The entering...
Thank you cvg, racookpe1978, Chicopee, GD2, georgerverghese and LittleInch for your comments. I'll add some additional information/clarifications as a result of the comments.
The project is a mine in Northern Canada. The pipeline will not be electrically traced, due to the shortage of power...
We have a problem to solve with an overland water pipeline in very cold weather (minus 40 degrees). The pipe will be a 14" diameter DR11 HDPE material and 19,000 feet long. The flowrate will be 2,500 USgpm at a velocity of about 7.3 fps. The question is whether or not to insulate the pipe...
To LittleInch, Steve Jones and weldstan - thanks for your valuable input. The project is actually a mining project with a pipeline on surface to transport the mined product to the processing plant. We'll be sure to engage a competent pipeline contractor.
I appreciate your participation.
Over...
