Dear John,
As per my experience in our DC exciters brushes can be deformed/chatter due to following reasons,
• If the Brush length got short
In this case the tension of spring will reduce and it will give more room to brush chatter and may move along with its it rotation direction.

Hi,
we are having one 70MW gas Turbine Generator with one RTD only in the Turbine end and 3 RTD in the Exciter end. Total 6 in each side (including three spares). now 5 Rtds bad in the Turbine end left only one is healthy.
So its a question whether we can run the unit with One RTD in Turbine...
