    Possible to Precipitate Ammonium Sulfate

I have a batch of partially used pickling acid (sulfuric acid) which mistakenly had some flux introduced into it. The ferrous concentration is about 4% currently. The flux is a mixture of ammonium chloride, potassium chloride, zinc chloride, and sodium chloride. Is there a process to remove via...

VIII-1 (2023) material recertification by vessel manufacturer

One such example would be to leverage higher allowable stress. In any event, the reason for recertifying material has no bearing on whether it is permitted or not. Are Sections II and VIII-1 silent on this issue? If so, I will submit an interpretation request. Phil www.quicktanks.com

Combining different bolt sizes on a flange

Interesting question. The only time I've seen mixed bolt sizes in a connection is on my farm tractor, rim to hub connection. I'm not sure why they did it, and it is annoying. Best to avoid that situation as you seem to have decided to do. Phil www.quicktanks.com

VIII-1 (2023) material recertification by vessel manufacturer

May material produced and marked (with full documentation) to a specification which IS permitted by this Division be recertified by the Certificate Holder (vessel/part manufacturer) to another specification which is also permitted by this Division following the process detailed by UG-10(a)...

SA-20 and SA-414 Marking Requirements for Plates Produced from Coil

When steel plates covered under SA-20 are produced from coil, does the "plate identifier" marking required in 13.1.1 refer to the coil # or something else? It is clear that subdivided plates should carry the original master plate identifier, so I would think that principle would apply to plates...

    ASME VIII-1 Opening Design

@DriveMeNuts, Thank you for the helpful response. My intention is to exclude pipe area in the opening reinforcement calc. I did not see sketch v-1 through w-2 as applicable since the intention is to fillet weld the pipe to the flange on the inside and the outside as in sketch k. Sketch k does...

    ASME VIII-1 Opening Design

See attached image. My question is concerning the design of the pipe which is to be welded into the ID of the single tap pad flange. I'm thinking that the developed opening should be taken as the ID of the flange. The pipe needs to pass UG-45 calc, and pipe-to-flange welds should be per Fig...

Book suggestions - Boiler System Design

What are your favorite books on the topic of boiler system design? I'm most interested in condensate polishers and DA's and how corrosion prevention is managed. TIA! Phil www.quicktanks.com

    Limit of re-pad thickness.

SnTMan is correct. The definition of A5 references Note 2, which establishes the effective limit of the repad thickness. In my business, repads have always been ≤ shell/head thickness. Phil www.quicktanks.com

AISC 370, E4 single angle (stainless steel)

Yes, AISC 370. E5 requires E3 and E4 sections to be used unless certain conditions are met. Phil www.quicktanks.com

AISC 370, E4 single angle (stainless steel)

How do you properly apply section E4 for single angles? For single angles, neither the y-axis nor the x-axis is the axis of symmetry. The w-axis is the axis on symmetry. Should I replace Fey with Few, by using rw and Lcw? This approach would be consistent with the User Note concerning channels...

    Impact Test Exemptions - Flanges

Yes, I believe that was the reason, which is ironic. I use COMPRESS for my design work and it doesn't give the designer the correct MDMT for flanges like my example. I contacted their support center and the assigned support person disagrees with using the UCS-66(c) exemption as I have described...

    Impact Test Exemptions - Flanges

If a standard B16.5 or B16.47 carbon steel flange is used in a vessel, does the UCS-66(c) impact test exemptions apply if the designer chooses to calculate the flange per App.2? My position is: Yes and here is why. Flanges evaluated per Appendix 2 must have their MDMT and impact test...

    Butt Weld Surface Offset

Let me know if I'm understanding this correctly... I design the taper per UW-9(c), and then in the shop UW-33 tolerances apply to the alignment specified in the design. Phil www.quicktanks.com

    Flange ring - ASME VIII

    @r6155, I think he's trying something like this: https://www.transwaysystems.com/wp-content/uploads/catablog/originals/7-Manway%2036%20Assembly%20Parts%20VSC%20Page%207.png Phil www.quicktanks.com

    Butt Weld Surface Offset

Section VIII-1, UW-9(c)(1), UW-13(b)(3), Fig. UW-13.1(l), UW-33 Let's assume I wanted to weld a 1/4" thk shell section to a 1/2" thk shell section in a Category B joint and I want the centerline of the materials to line up (surface offset of 1/8" on each side). If I provide the 3:1 taper...

Conical Section to Reverse Flange Joint Design

I'm going to discuss this with my AI, but wanted some other input before I do. Section VIII-1 (2019) Conical shell section with small end welded directly to reverse type flange: 1. Weld Joint Category C? 2. Weld type 7? Does the half-apex angle matter? (I don't think it does, if this is a Cat...

Flange design with full face gasket

    1. No for VIII-1. (Assuming the full face gasket is used with flat faced flanges.) 2. U-2(g)(-c) using Taylor Forge Bulletin 45 and/or 502. Check with your AI to be sure that TF45/502 meets this code paragraph. 3. Yes, see #2 above If this WNF will be bolted to a blind flange, see UG-34 and...

Acceptable Editions of Referenced Standards (VIII-1 Table U-3)

Thank you, Marty. My AI just brought that up, and I was curious how well known this code case was. Phil www.quicktanks.com
