Does Heat Treating Metal Change Published ASME Allowable Stress?

What do you mean permitted to use the material? Use as in stating it meets a certain grade? If I heat treat SS316 to stress relieve a part, will I be able to claim SS316 material properties published in ASME B31.3?

Does Heat Treating Metal Change Published ASME Allowable Stress?

Ok, so just to make sure that I'm understanding everything correctly; If I heat treat a grade 8 bolt after I buy it, the ASME published values no longer apply? So, in that case, I'd have to calculate bolt strength at temperature? If I'm trying to publish this data somehow for sound engineering...

Does Heat Treating Metal Change Published ASME Allowable Stress?

I'm running across a code issue that I can't seem to work out. I can look up temperature deratings for allowable stress easily per ASME B31.3 Table A-2. However, if I buy a bolt material (say A354 Grade 8 for example) and I heat treat it by tempering or quenching, would the temperature derating...

    Experience Based Qualification Welding Code

gtaw, thanks so much for your response. I appreciate it. I'll look into that

    Experience Based Qualification Welding Code

Hello all, I am trying to understand how I can get a machine shop qualified for welding requirements, so I started with reading ISO 15611 in more detail and was wondering if I could get some feedback in comparison to AWS standards. I see that the code mentions that a machine shop can produce ISO...

    ISO 15611 Welding Qualification Question

Hello all, I am trying to understand ISO 15611 in more detail and was wondering if I could get some feedback. I see that the code mentions that a machine shop can produce ISO quality welds if they go through an "Existing previous welding experience" procedure, where basically you have to have...

Helicoil Inserts ASME SECT VIII DIV 1

SnTMan, Alright, thanks! So all of ASME's code won't pertain to this question?

Helicoil Inserts ASME SECT VIII DIV 1

Hello all, I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to a section to study where the ASME code sect VIII div 1 talks about helicoil inserts and allowable strengths? I haven't been able to find any references so far from the UG section of the code. Thanks!

Calculating minimum thickness between bolt holes?

Hello all, I am trying to figure out where in the ASME code I can find specs for calculating the thickness between two bolts in a metal plate. The top of the plate will be under pressure, but I don't think that UG-27 applies to this case? Can anyone help? I've drawn a picture of the setup below...

Required Reinforcement Around Threaded Port - UG-34/37?

Thanks for the help! The connection won't be welded because it's milled out from a puck of steel, so I needed to calculate what is the appropriate reinforcement for the opening of the pilot hole. Thanks so much for your detailed responses. I appreciate it.

Required Reinforcement Around Threaded Port - UG-34/37?

Chicopee, What section of the code were you referring to that would apply to calculating as a reinforcement for the boss? Is it ug-37?

Required Reinforcement Around Threaded Port - UG-34/37?

Mike, Thanks so much for your help, I believe it is exempt as a result from UG-36c3. Thanks!

Required Reinforcement Around Threaded Port - UG-34/37?

Mike, I've reviewed UG-39, but it appears that the code assumes that the threaded section is welded on the pipe. I'm trying to find an analysis method for determining the height and thickness of the boss assuming it is just part of the milling process to make the flat plate?

Required Reinforcement Around Threaded Port - UG-34/37?

Hello all, So I am trying to figure out how the ASME code applies to a flat plate with a single threaded pipe port in the center. The plate is bolted down, so I am using UG-34 as the basis to calculate the "web thickness" of the plate (disregarding the pipe hole in the plate). Then, after I get...
